Is it ok to put a newer bellville spring into an early model A727? Would the extra stiffness cause problems?

That's fine, and a good idea, you will need to use a taller piston with it though to take up the slack.

There are two bellville springs used in the 727, pre 74 and 74 and up, the later spring is a better design, more beef to it but it is flater, the pre 74 piston will work but it is best to use both the 74 and up spring and piston together, the later piston is taller, I think .830" as opposed to .782" for the early piston. Cope makes an even taller piston out of billet to take up this clearance.
