Hello everyone,

I am interested in purchasing a RV 440/727 combo on Craigslist to swap into 318/904 1971 Charger.

It would be the engine and transmission connected to the frame. The other is for sale, but I believe the transmission hooked up to it is one that is not meant for cars. Either one would be fine, but I think the one on the frame would be ideal.

The seller says that the motors are out of RVs and that they were running when they were pulled out of the vehicles.

The 727 transmission bolted to the engine is one meant for cars from what the seller told me.

What do you guys think of using an RV 440 to swap into my car?

The seller said that he is asking $600 for the 440 and 727.

Good/Bad price? What is a fair price to pay for a combo like this?

Also, I have read that these engines can sometimes be a 413 that is not so good. Is there a possibility that these might not be 440s? Is there a way to identify if they are 440s?

Thanks everyone!

Look for 440 casted on the side of the block and should be stamped on the pad. 440'

This casting number with the engine size didn’t start until 1973. All V8’s
1971 and older didn’t have the engine size cast in like you see here.

What year are the 440's? The wife and I just went through this. We have a 67 plymouth fury (sorry no b body but i have lurked here for a couple years) that was an original 318la/727 that we put a edlebrock 1406, performer intake, and electronic ignition on. Ran good but not fast. She wanted a big block so we found a 400 from a 78 newport that we heard run, paid $1000 for the engine and trans. I knew the later motors had low compression but did not think it would be too big a deal. Well we swapped it in and i will tell you now that the 400 is barely more powerful than the 318, and i mean barely. So if they are late model 440's just be aware that you will not pickup much power. We intend to do a cam/intake/gears and eventually rebuild but she was pretty disappointed. If they really run i think $600 if fair. Not sure if they are still available since ad is deleted but if they are see if you can bump the one on the frame over with a battery hooked to starter, you can also put a little gas in a bottle with a hose to carb to see if it will run.

I don't think that they ever put a 413 in an RV, but I could be wrong.

Truck motors offered him the wrong rear crank flange do you use with a car transmission

They did put a 413 cubic inch motor in RV's. It was pretty easy to identify, as I believe, they had sort of scalloped valve covers like the old poly 318's. Saw a few sets of these heads at a junkyard I worked at in the late 80's/ early 90's.

They go for $500 around here, check to be sure you can use a driveshaft for a car as the tranny often has the wrong output shaft.

I tried using one and was not happy with the results, even with different cam the bottom end was soggy from too low of compression. Best to replace pistons.

Make sure the motor you buy does not have the truck/industrial cylinder heads. Totally different exhaust bolt pattern and different water pump set up. Not good for a car!!

There you go, those are the 413 RV heads I saw. Guess I was wrong about the valve covers, sorry.

Thanks to all that replied. I am now considering other options such as a nicely built, street 360 that should bolt up easier.

Don't give up on the 440!! Remember the adage that there is "no Replacement for BIG Displacement!!!" The Basic cam intake carb job will help you wake that up ALOT! Sounds like you have a purely street car low end torque is what you want none better than the 440!
