My dad has a cast iron 833 overdrive that he wants to install behind the 440 going into his 69 satellite. This is upgrading from the slant 6, 3 speed manual. He has had the front bearing retainer machined down to fit the bellhousing. He has a new Hurst shifter. I spent a few hours with him today trying to get a set of new, aftermarket shift rods from Year One to work. Nope. So far off spec, not 1 rod works.
Anybody have some suggestions? I was wondering if the truck shift rods would work since they were overdrive with the long tail shaft, from what I understand.

Normal B body rods and levers should work, with minor adjustment. Depending on the shifter being used. What levers on the trans are being used and why would the rod not work?

The rods we tried were new aftermarket from Year One. If we tightened the nuts to the shafts, the shift rods were WAY out of plane to attach to the Hurst shifter. Hope that makes sense.

Some pictures of the tranny / shifter / rods might help give an idea of whats up
That's a great idea...unfortunately my dad lives an hour away and isn't willing to learn how to use a phone to take pictures. Sorry I didn't think about that. If you look straight down from the top of the trans, the shifter rods when tightened to the trans are sticking away from the transmission at least 1/2-1". Far enough that attaching to the shifter would not be possible without bending or damaging something. I honestly think either the rods are chinese junk that is out of spec or they sent us something shaped wrong.

So either the shifter brackets should have bends in them out to the rods or the rods need bends in them back to the shifter sounds like.
I am no expert on this but have worked on a few back in the day and that sounds like the issue.
I'm sure someone here can chime in on what to do next.

Look at brewers website for pictures. 1-2 and reverse should be like a b body. 3-4 you have to flip the lever upside down. I wish I had pictures from when I did mine. I just dug through the box of spare 4 speed parts til I found what worked.

That set looks close to what B body are, so as mentioned a picture is going to help. You need to be using the shifter mount for a b body, not any of the truck or OD adapter plates if that pushed the shifter to far away from the trans.

Was the 833od out of a truck?...there are different shifter mounting locations on the transmission. Most 833ods I've run into are out of A bodies.

Yes, I believe a truck or van. He has the b body shifter mount installed.

On a A body we turned the 3rd 4th arm upside down to change the shift pattern back to the normal pattern. Took some adjustment but it worked. I would guess the shift arms on the tranny may be positioned different for a truck or van then a b. Some of those kits are universal and come with the arms. If you try just putting the b rods on a truck shift arms that may be a issue. But I am sure someone on the forum has overcome it.

I may be wrong, but thought the shifter mount moved forward some and trans mount moved back some on 70 and up 4 speeds. Is it in the car already? I would have expected the shifter handle hitting the dash, shifter body not lining up right in the tunnel hole and the trans crossmember not lining up right.
Please let me know if this works as it would be good to know for the future.

More info I had never heard/thought about. Thank you.
Trans is not in the car. We were trying to get it mocked up and adjusted first.
I will do my best to keep this updated. We move to Wyoming in 3 weeks, so I'm super busy.

I have the same set up on my 69 charger. The cast iron main case Longtail shaft housing with dual shifter mounts, A833. Came out of a mid 70'S dodge streetvan. I used shift rods that I had. And the only problem I had was the speedometer cable rubbing on the reverse rod. So I bent the reverse rod down to clear. And I used a 70 shifter mechanism so the levers are 1" longer to reduce the shifter throws on top for use with the 70 pistol grip shifter.

The shifter mounts on tail shaft are in the same location. Same as car tail shaft. It is the later casting number. The mount for the cross member is the 70 position which is same as an Auto location for 69, so that should work too. In 70 they moved the mount pad forward so the same cross member as auto could be used. Since your 69 started as auto that should not be a problem.

Started as a 3 speed manual.
