We were at the farmers market last week. The 30 or so year old chick had an adding machine. Used it, gave us the price than said that can’t be right. $25.50 for the veggies. Gave her $40.00. After she got the price tight she still used the machine to figure out how much change she owed us. I’m like OMG. R u for real, u can’t even do simple math. She said I’ve always used the machine. Oh boy oh boy. Kim

Fingers and toes then to the adding machine!> Sad. And we pay teachers to teach and who expects their kids to learn?? The parents? No, Santa Claus.
Everyone is winner and all get a prize!

Yahoo?

I've seen 'em not be able to readily figure out what coins/dollars combination to pull out
of the cash drawer even when the machine is telling them how much to give back.
Not kidding...
More than once, I've coached them with "that's two quarters, three dimes, a nickel and two pennies"
or whatever the amount was.
Rather than suspect I was trying to cheat them, they are grateful for the help usually.
Scary stuff...

These days they're all happy when you just pay with a card.

Ya, same here. Kim

I'd love to see a group of 100 25 year olds, average intelligence, take a basic math test with no calculators...... the percentages may be astounding........ simple long division would probably cause a mass exodus for the safe space

That very reason will be the downfall of civilization. Loss of the basics

...but these are the future "engineers" who will "build and maintain our infrastructure"....

Because, participation trophies.
Because, math is racist.
Because, proper grammar is racist.
Because, tests are racist.

It's racist to tell anyone they aren't good enough, or as good as that other person...so everything is going right down the shitter.

Learn it now, before they take it out of the dictionary (like taking the statues out of city squares):

meritocracy mĕr″ĭ-tŏk′rə-sē

  • n.
A system in which advancement is based on individual ability or achievement.

Pick on the young. I can name a whole slew of the over 70's group that don't appear to be real bright either and these are people running our nation.

Years ago, many politicians were also law school graduates, not so much these days. Quote from a presenter at the last law seminar I attended: “Good thing for us that lawyers are smarter than politicians…” But not so good for the country.
