I am building a new street motor (451 stroker) and was thinking about what type and brand of ignition to go with. I have the MP dist. with coil and ballast resistor/box on the firewall now. I am looking for reliability and simple, the K.I.S.S. method, not a race only system.

I've looked at the Pertronix, DUI, and FOB systems, but don't know much about ignitions to be honest.

If you want to keep it simple, keep the factory points.
If you want a CD box, check out the Daytona sensors CD-1 system. Best CD ignition I’ve ever used

Use the MP electronic ignition system you have and add a NOS box. The MP distributor should be re-curved for your setup. 440'

Like to add a question to this thread, that I've never seen mentioned.
Never seen anyone talk about Magneto ignition on a street car. Friend ran a Schiefer magneto on a 427 Vette for a short time. He didn't tighten down a poly-lock and jam in cam and mag drive gear. He said watch this had the against the block and spun it buy hand and it through a 2" spark.

The old "gold standard" of magnetos was a SCINTILLA VERTEX. Use to see them on dragsters, altereds, some times on gassers. Don't know if they are still in business or have been absorbed by someone else. The beauty of a magneto is no external power is required to operate. The internal points are only interrupting slight primary winding current so very little point wear occurs. The magneto also has a very high turns ratio (secondary voltage produced vs induced primary voltage) resulting in high output voltage, plus the cap and rotor were integral to the unit. Very reliable....

I like the HEI ignition. But the large top can interfere depending on valve covers. I did my own conversion using Mopar electronic distributor w HEI module mounted underneath on an aluminum heat sink. I took an old ballast and gutted it, put in a 10ga wire and put silicone on the back and remounted to firewall. Used a Blaster 2 or 3 round coil. Looks stock. Gap my plugs at 0.052 and never had a problem. But no matter what you run, you will have to figure out your curve, both mechanical and vacuum. They are all different.

I like Firecore distributors along with a FBO box with rev limiter.
I have a car with a MSD ready to run which has given me no problems as well. But I like the idea of replacing just a box or distributor better.

Sorry I should have stated that I'm working with a 77 400 lean burn motor that was switched to the MP system. The new motor is a 400 stroked to 451 via "440sorce" kit.

Zero issues with 2 Pertronix drop-ins. Easy to wire, looks stock.

love love love my mopar OE electronic ignition. stock distributor and box. like was said just recurve for your set up and done. you want it simple? nothing more simple than not changing anything

Many different members here... many different opinions here lol....
Personally I ran a chrome box with a Mopar electronic distributor.... always a high speed miss, always.... Now I swear by MSD boxes on anything I run. no issues, none.

Lucky guy. Damn near every race trailer at the track has a extra box or 2 on hand. You always hear over the loudspeaker someone needs a MSD 6XXXXX box.

I have an old 7box, and a Digital6 box.... both have been great. They are both a few years old tho, and I have heard rumors (although they are just that) that newer stuff is Chinese, or packed with Chinese or worse electronic innerds, and have some issues.

Well I ran the MP orange ECU and the Accel Super coil with no ballast on my 63 from 2006 until about a year ago. Its a pump gas street car and has run 10.70's @ 125 never missing a beat. But I will say this that just over a year ago I got a good deal on a new MSD 6AL digital box and I grabbed it as I always wanted to try the MSD with its multi-spark below 3000 rpm and the fact MSD uses a capacitor to fire the coil and pumps over 300 volts into the coil primary instead of the primary winding saturating with 7 to 12 volts feeding it between cylinders firing to fire the plugs. Well I have not got to the race track yet but I will say I am 100% happy with the MSD. The car ran fine with the MP ign but it took a few eng cranks to start before where it fires even faster now and it just seems to respond so good as the car is running awesome and as good or better then ever. I still use my Mallory race dist that uses a pick-up coil just like the Mopar dist does and of course I went with the recommended MSD blaster coil with their setup. All I can say is you cant beat the MSD basic setup on a mild street car. But as I said I was happy with the MP ign all them years but the MSD just seems to run so well and keeps the plugs cleaner. Many dirrerentr choices out there for sure, realy depends on what you want for the outcome and price range. A generall cruiser that came with points they are still fine for that, then if you want to add say half a second at the track add a fulll bllown MSD setup, really preference on what the outcome is.

Thanks for the feed back. I wanted to see what the thoughts were if you had the chance to build a complete system with a fresh motor. The car is just a street car that will have a 451 stroker motor and ~450+ HP nothing major. The Cordoba is heavy as hell, so no drags, just a car you don't see very often having fun.

How ill you drive it get on it once in a while? Your case I ike the Petronix, good bang for the buck, obviously you want a curve that wil work for the motor also.
