I know this forum is for B bodies but I figure there has to be a lot of Ram truck owners on here. I have a 2014 Ram 2500 5.7 and the 8.4 R4AN nav just started going stupid. I took it to the dealer bc I had to for the tail gate lock recall and had them check out the nav. They told me that it was a hardware problem and I needed to replace the head unit which would cost me something like $880 installed. He then told me that there were "other" systems in the aftermarket that were probably better.

So I have been researching options and it seems to come down to a few
  • have my unit refurbished (~$400)
  • source a new Mopar unit (~$700)
  • get an add on apple car play system (wired or BT) (~$700)
  • replace the entire head unit with a new AM system (~$1600)
I am wondering if anyone here has done something like this. Its just the nav which isn't working (accurately) which I could just supplement with a Garmin or something but I would much prefer it come up in the screen. Also I would like to add a front camera.

Appreciate any comments (of the constructive variety)

The aftermarket head units wont have direct connections for steering wheel controls if you have them. You will then need to add a steering wheel control box to the mix to be able to use them. Kenwood has some nice nav head units but hell they are upwards of 1200.00. I think getting your factory unit refurbished would be the best choice. You can buy a dash cam for under 100.00 but don't expect quality. Also add to the price of the radio you would have to have a new bezel kit and harness kit that is an additional 195.00 I would just replace or repair the OE one and call it a day. Also upon reading if you have a factory amp and you bypass the amp you then need to buy new 4ohm speakers. Way too much work.

Check out this site then look at suggested parts. https://www.crutchfield.com/m_266150/Car-Stereos.html

Before you spend money though. Have you tried updating the stereo software? If not follow this link for instructions.

And then this one.

Yes I tried to update it, still no good.

I am looking at infotainment currently, they have some great solutions but are very expensive but they do integrate with all of the factory controls. I am also now looking at Apple Play integration systems which are interesting because if I can get apple play then I can gun google maps and I am good.

I don't want a dash cam, I want a front cam so I can see what is directly in front of m. I have after market bumpers and I am always afraid of hitting someone or something in a parking lot.
