Stealing Pickup Beds?

Stealing the whole truck is easier than taking a box off?? WTH?? An people ask me why I keep on driving a beater! It's a 95 Dakota that looks like crap but it keeps on going like an old Dart. I have a really nice 96 Dakota and well, it doesn't get out much and for good reason. The 95 has a 94 tailgate with a couple of good pellet gun dents in it and a few other things but I guess it's bad enough that no one wants it.
Lol, before I spent the tons restoring my old Plymouth I'd drive it all over on errands leaving out on parking lots not worrying about door dings or worse. NOW, I'm all concerned and won't drive it nearly as much as I used to...some-ting is effed up...here.

Used to drive my 66 Belvedere everywhere including to work but it's been hibernating in the shop since 98 :(

Oh...ya must a made it real nice didn't ya, or developed the dreaded fear of it getting skanked? Funny - the ongoing comments about how sweet my Plymouth was BEFORE all the resto...and a few guys who seemed to know their stuff saying it was a cherry looking car in like a #2 condition...ahh it wasn't...but LOOKED nicer than it was.

I have a fellow in Texas , Diaz auto parts. I’ve bought from him and he does me good. Trino is his name.. Clean stuff and reasonable. As far as thieves go, cut their fingers off one at a time and then knock their knees sideways till they can’t walk.
Sounds like a plan. Why is it people can’t keep there hands off other peoples stuff. Then when they get hurt stealing it’s the property owners fault. If you can’t jail them stone them problem solved

Mine never did look real nice. It had a 25 footer paint job when I got it but I knew that before buying it and well, then I razor bladed off the crappy paint and sanded here and there and covered that with epoxy primer and kept driving it lol

I've been hunting for a rust-free box for my Dakota and my brother tells me today he came across an article about truck owners in the sunbelt states getting their pickup boxes stolen to sell them in the in the rust belt! Here I thought getting catalytic convertors ripped off was bad enough...geezuz...what's next?
When you say "Box"...
Are you referring to the actual Truck Bed or the Bed Tool Box?

Six to eight bolts is all there is on most pickups. There are some trucks where you have to remove the gas tank(s) to get to at least one fastener..

Dakota beds are the same from 1987 - 1992, 1993 - 1996, then 1997 - 2004. 2005-up is a totally different bed from the '04-earlier beds.

Thays frigging crazy.
Balls!!
Yeah - now have to come up with anti-theft devices for boxes? Would seem less hassle to steal the whole truck...crazy.

Tack weld a few nuts or bolts, to slow them down...or

I don't usually post "feel good stories" but in December of 2019 before all the covid crap hit we
had finished a late hockey game at a local rink. Six of us walked out to the parking lot sorta
together and heard a strange noise ....what the hell is that type of thing. Turned out to be
a lowlife under a new Chevy with a cordless saw chopping off the cat.
Now six pissed off guys with hockey sticks can leave a few marks on your sorry ***.
Cops found 14 converters in his old POS van and not much was said about him being
sorta dinged up.

I bet the bed theifs have cordless ratchets ready to go,, I'll have to look under my truck bed. Maybe I can wrap a fat cable somewhere? A chain would be annoying, clanging around.
Thoughts?

I like Potts pit bull...wonder if special head bolts could be used - but - now there's this nifty socket out I've seen in ads that can remove any weird shape bolt or nut - it conforms to the shape of it...

It's still in pieces.....drove it for 10 years before blowing it apart....but it never was a #2 car.....more like an 8 but with a very solid body and pretty straight. It had like 10 coats of paint on it when I bought it and it really wasn't a very good paint job and then it started to react with whatever was under it. That's when I decided to start prepping it for a repaint and found it had all those coats. Turned out that razor blading it off was easier than sanding it. The scrapings filled up two 5 gallon buckets! Put some primer on it after that and kept driving it :D Kept working on it doing all kinds of crazy stuff to it to make it lighter....until the front end got bad enough to say it's time for a total rebuild and that's when life got in the way. Got it all apart and my dad passed on....and the story doesn't get any better.

Since my last reply to this topic, I've been thinking? How many people does it take to carry a pickup bed? I know they're not light and small like a cat. converter, and how long does it take for one person to unbolt a bed to steal?
There just seems to be to many bullshit variables that are just wrong to believe this is a problem from what the OP's saying. JMHO

Absolutely. You steal the entire truck then sell the parts

It's pretty easy to take a bed off of a 95 Dakota with just 2 people but you need a good back to do it and have the tail gate off to help make bed lighter. Four screws for the gas fill at the bed and iirc, 6 screws hold the bed on and cut the wiring for the tail lights or unplug it. Been over 15 years ago since having mine off but that's how I remember it.

I can have most beds loose and ready to come off in 10-15 minutes with a cordless impact , a zip gun for the filler neck and side cutter for the wires- if I’m not keeping them. 3 tools!
Ford would be the problem though as the bolts go thru the top and usually seized and you strip the torx head bolt.. then comes a torch.
