It's a 383 4 bbl car and the original motor/trans are long gone. The car did come with a 1977 440 and a 727 auto trans. How can I tell what kind of 727 I have and if it will be a good transmission for a high performance car. The motor had the codes on it, but I don't see any on the transmission.

That 77 engine will be a low compression engine if its untouched and came out of an RV. You might want to post some pictures of the 727 also. Some of the RV 727's have a brake drum on the rear tail shaft. I had a 75 440 the pistons were way down in the hole. And the trans had that brake drum on the back which is a parking brake.

Welcome ...
looks like a th400 long tailshaft out of a big car... buick, olds, or pontiac.

Welcome aboard from Ohio. We all will figure this out!

1977 440. The oil pan looks like its for a truck motor, maybe a D500, D800 or a motorhome. It needs rebuilding so I'll tear it down and take it in to the machine shop to see what kind of shape the block and crank are in first.

Cool that is indeed a 440. Now looking at the engine from the front. Right above the right side where the 2 holes are for thee water pump there is a flat area. Everything you need to know about the engine is stamped there. It will say something like T440 Look at the second picture I posted here. Those numbers are what you want to know.

I do see a set of truck/rv manifolds and a truck/rv/c body water pump housing in your first pic.

Welcome from Alabama, I thought this was about a 68 Charger. Where's the car? Looks like you acquired a 440 and something with it. Were they bolted together when you got it.

I think some of this is correct.

7 = 1977 model year
T = Trenton, MI engine assembly plant
440 = 440 cu.in.
E = cast crankshaft
