Books

I just read Greenlights by Matthew McCaugnohey.

I read a book titled. --I cannot forgive. The writer lived in the extermination camps in Germany. I was about 16 when this real life story hit a nerve with my learning about being a human. What I came away with is how easy cruel and evil behaviour can become a normal waking routine. I clearly know that it is not instinctive. It is indoctrinated . Humans will kill and torture other humans if they are trained to do so. Compassion for the wellbeing of others is not a given from birth. It is learned about over time.

I think the potential for evil is in every human heart.

Just started reading The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharris. Pretty gruesome account of surgeries in Victorian Age. I'm glad to be living in the 21st century!

John Todd and the Underground Railroad: Biography of an Iowa Abolitionist

is my current book. Southwest Iowa was at the confluence of Missouri (slave State) Iowa (free State) Nebraska (supposedly free) and bloody Kansas (fought to be slave and free). The book details the life of abolitionist John Todd and his peers founding the town of Tabor, Iowa (just south of my home town), as well as them establishing the most western out post of the underground railroad in Iowa. Covers the social and political atmosphere of pre civil war slavery as well a detailed biography of a principled man and his fight to help others to freedom. Many landmarks of my area are mentioned including my hometown. Cameo appearances by other abolitionists including John Brown.

Have you ever noticed how very young children act out and get worse if not corrected? If you want someone to be super evil, you start them out at a young age like what happened in Germany before WWII. A buddy of mine did something like that by being pretty rough with his kid whenever the kid messed up. The kid ended up being mean and pissed when he got a little older....

I think it's easier to damage a child emotionally than physically.

Was just talking about ‘discipline’ with a body shop owner friend today as we were looking over a car in his shop that had been stolen twice…yep, he fixed it all up for the owner six months ago now messed up again from the kids who lifted it and went joy riding in it. WDF hey? These skank bastards get caught sometimes and doesn’t mean ****…they’re back out on the street doing it again. My dad hit me rather mildly maybe 3 times growing up, whereas mom would get pissed bringing out her wooden spoon. Dad was a calm sort; but had his limits and most of the time it was required to offer him an intelligent explanation of why we did what we did and our plan to not do it again. Saying “I don’t know” wasn’t acceptable. Lol, that could be painful sometimes preferring mom would whack us with the spoon and be done with it. But among the dire lines crossed was stealing and lying.

IMO, the problem lies with not holding the parents of theses adolescents or younger on the streets accountable for the actions of their offspring. What’s the saying? Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me? A kid commits one crime (often devoid of any serious consequences) their parents should be placed on notice in no uncertain terms THEY will be held to account as if THEY committed the crime. If they don’t think they have a vested interest in raising their kids…like WE do, justice be delivered to remind them of it. This bullshit has to be addressed and it sure isn’t happening right now.
