Baseball cards may or may not be down for breakfast

Was never a baseball card guy.

I do have a early 80's Steve Garvey and a mid 70's Ken Griffey Sr stamped steel coin.

My son loved collecting ball cards, I gave thousands away, but saved hundreds worth some cash. One day I'll give them to someone that's really into it. I'll know when and who.

...the thing is.....Baseball cards were physical presence to be cherished and collected. The reason for that, the players were cherished and likeable. That has largely gone down the road with moneyball and incredibly poor decision making by MLB. They took a knee too many times.

In my youth a pack of cards was a nickel and you could carry the whole collection in a pants pocket. The schoolyard was where deals and trades were made. Half your set was "won" playing various games. Nowadays the price is ridiculous for what you get, touching the cards with bare hands is a no-no and you need a small storage cabinet to contain a single set.

My grandfather was a custodian at an elementary school and used to bring me home bags of cards on a daily basis that teachers had confiscated and tossed in the trash!!

Man, when I think of the cards and comic books my mother tossed in the trash ... !!!

Can't forget the stick of rock hard gum!!

Not to worry, Fanatics will be printing them. The baseball card is not dead.

I think a pack of Topps was about 15-20 cents when I bought a lot on my paper route. Still have every single card since buying them starting around mid-70's. I made sure nobody threw them out.

Made a ton of money in the mid 80s on old cards. Then all these new card companies came out and saturated the market. If your going to collect, pre 1975 is the way to go.

Just pointing out the obvious....Topps isn't the only baseball card company out there.

That comment probably sailed right past quite a few folks... I sure do remember that sound however...

should have a research project to see which card maker sounds the best.

Yes ! where the future GM's traded cards to get the "unobtainable"ones. Or, we'd flip them one at a time, two kids & you picked odd or even, how they landed determined if you won that flip. The rest got attached to your bicycle with a clothespin so the spokes gave you that motorcycle "sound" & 2 even louder !

A couple of guys disagreeing that MLB is losing fans ?? What ? Where have you been ? It's been on a decline for like 5 years now. And no indications of a turnaround of any sort.

I wonder if old Fleer went down the drain along time ago ?
