Underhood pics

I was recently afforded this photo of a basically untouched 64 Sport Fury 426-S. Lots of things to be garnered here such as passenger exhaust manifold rear exhaust shield, fuel line, small rivit rad cap, correct oil fill cap & my fav, the painted firewall to engine ground strap.

Here's mine. 440 dressed up in 426 Street Wedge stuff in my '64 Polara. Big blocks were red in Canada through 1966. Other engine is 426 Street Wedge with '62 Chrysler 300H intake and carbs in '64 Polara 500 Convertible I used to own.

Dave I have a 64 Plymouth Canadian brochure and noticed no mention of the Sport Fury. Were they available up there in 64??

Yes, Windsor, Ontario factory assembled some Sport Furies in 1964. This did not happen until after the start of calendar year 1964, so did not make it into the early sales brochures. They differed from U.S. models by using Polara 500 front bucket seats and rear seats. The door panels and rear inside panels were like regular Fury, instead of the fancier U.S. Sport Fury panels. Likewise, we also got Canadian Polara 500 production late in the year. Again, these differed from U.S. cars. The Canadian Dodges all got 1964 Plymouth instrument panels and the door panels and rear inside panels resembled U.S. Fury pieces. Before the Sport Fury and Polara 500 came out, you could get bucket seats in your Fury or Polara by ordering the "Sport Package". This gave these cars a bucket seat and console interior, but without the swirled outside chrome treatment. Also, no Sport Fury or Polara 500 badges. My Polara 4-door Hardtop is an early "Sport Package" car with factory buckets and console. I have owned this car 41 years, and have only seen one other like it. A buddy of mine owns a Canadian 1964 Sport Fury in the Dark Cherry color. I think they called it Mahogany and it was a Plymouth-only color. Canadian Sport Furies and Polara 500's are super rare, as I have only seen a handful of each.

Ok so I have an early brochure. Interesting info Dave. I knew 64 Polara 500 had Sport Fury instrumentation. I met a guy buy the name of Dan from Ontario if I remember correctly at Carlisle 2019. He had brought down a clean red 64 Polara convertible that had been converted to a 4 speed. His car had the Sport Fury instrumentation.

I had just bought my 64 SF only weeks before. He was quite knowlegable.

We took our 1964 Polara 4-door hardtop to the Mopar Nationals in Columbus one year. Not only does it have factory bucket seats and console, but the seats resemble 1963 Plymouth Sport Fury seats, rather than Polara 500 seats. These seats are not hinged and do not fold ahead. With the Plymouth instrument panel and Fury door panels, people thought I made this car out of spare parts. Something like Johnny Cash's Cadillac.

Ha! Hilarious! A great conversation piece!

I am lucky to own a 64 Canadian Sport fury. The spare tire is mounted in the trunk where U.S. convertibles have, on the right hand side.
I was told that my car was one of only a few. Interestingly, on mine the trim that goes around the trunk has "PLYMOUTH" on it, just like the front grill.
I'm not sure if it's original or off another year, but I have not seen another. I also have a factory vinyl roof. I have never seen a photo of another Sport Fury with one, but I'm sure they were available. I've owned a lot of Mopars over the years, A/B/and E bodies, but this car has become my favorite. There's something about a 64. Oh by the way Dave, my Plymouth has the exact interior as your Dodge.

Have not seen a Sport Fury or Fury with a vinyl top. And don't see it listed as an option.

I have a 1964 Dodge Polara 500 magazine ad announcing the vinyl top option. I also have a small dealer brochure showing the vinyl top on a Polara, as well as features on the Dart and 880.

My 64' Polara was a vinyl top car when i got it.

Thanks for the info guys. dmoore, I checked out the link you sent me and yes, that's my tail trim. Also, my trunk lid only says Fury, not Sport Fury but I read that all Canadian Furys , sport or not, only had that trunk emblem (from Bone Stock Magazine). I do have the Sport Fury on the rear quarters and looking at their install and the undercoat around the mounting holes they are original. Also my ownership for the car states S Fury under model. As for the roof, under the windshield trim and gasket are a row of factory staples thru the metal as well as proper seam sealer etc. The car is original white with a black vinyl roof, and black interior with buckets and console. Again my interior is identical to dmoores except 2 door of course. I have the metal covered glove box door, as well as a matching radio delete plate. Gauge cluster includes a clock and there is an E-brake warning light under the dash. Millage is just over 42,000. Car was original 383 / auto / 8-3/4 but came with a built 440 installed. I have the original 383 short block and the trans and diff are also original. Right now the car is down to her shell, and I have been busy finding replacements for some of the dented trim and such. The body is in wonderful shape considering she has spent her life in Canada. The only problems are around the cowl and the front floor pans. I have a complete floor from AMD, and a replacement cowl which I will be ready to install shortly. From what I have for history the car started as the first owners pride and joy. Second owner decided to make her into a street/strip machine which included lots of mechanical upgrades, go fast parts and a color change. Next guy wanted a weekender, and along came another color change. Now it's my turn. Luckily, car was not messed with to much and has retained almost all it's original stuff. Pretty good for over 50 years. Now one question. Does anyone know where the different "PLYMOUTH" trunk trim originates from?
dmoores link to Hemmings shows a good photo (thanks again), but I cannot find out why there are the two types. Can anyone help?
Sorry to go on so long, and THANKS to all the have took the time to respond.

I went back and looked through my 64 Plymouth brochures including the Canadian brochure and the only car with that rear trim with the Plymouth lettering was Belvedere. Also no mention of a vinyl top option.

Wow, I really appreciate your helping me. You must have a BIG library of documentation for these cars. My memory did get jogged a little today. When I stripped down the trunk, I now remember finding some very slight damage that had been dollied out along where that trim sits. It's likely that some slight damage happened
and the trim was replaced rather than fixed. Perhaps the same thing happened to the car in Hemmings? Now for the roof. As I said the car has been stripped down to the bare metal. I have taped up the vinyl roof to protect it. But I decided to go out and take some photos to send to you. The close ups show the metal staples that are holding down the front of the vinyl, which is under the trim. These staples also run along under the trim for the backlight (rear glass). The rest of the top is glued down to the metal of the roof. Now I am very lucky to live very close to a Canadian company called National Moparts. Besides selling repo parts, NOS items and doing restos, they have a huge outside yard with rows and rows of old Chryslers. I have been going there for close to 40 years. It really is just like the old auto wreckers from years ago. They also have shipping containers and racks filled with vintage used parts. I bring this up because I have seen many vinyl top cars there and the method of fastening the vinyl is the exact same as on my car. I am very sure that my roof is original. I really can't see someone going to the trouble of having a roof installed on this car. I do not know of any company back then that added these roofs after manufacture. I know there were and are marine business that install roofs on boats and did repairs, etc. To have this job done post build, removing all the trim, bringing down head liner in the rear to get at the nuts holding the side trim certainly would be a lot of work. And the way the staples are installed is exactly the way I have seen on other older Chrysler products. The person I got the car from told me that it had the roof when he bought it. I asked because I had not seen a 64 with this. I have seen 65's however. I was looking for feedback and got some.
Anyway, thank you again for sharing your reference with me. Understand that I asked if anyone had seen a vinyl roof 64 simply because I am curious. I felt that there might be some good people who might have been curious as well. And I was right. Thanks everyone for your interest. If anyone can add to this, I would be grateful Thanks!

^^^ Yes, my 64' Polara has the same staples in the front and i believe the rear also. The vinyl was installed before the glass of course. Under the side roof trim there was flat stock that was screwed into the roof to clamp the vinyl and the drip rail molding covers it. C pillars were drilled for Fratzog emblems but the vinyl was installed over the holes and no emblem installed. Car was a factory ac car but i don't know anything more then that as the car was missing the fender tag.

Thanks Dan. Mine is exactly the same except for the emblems. Still trying to find that "other guy" with a 64 Sport Fury/Fury with vinyl.

Your welcome! Maybe someone will chime in on this topic. I wonder if it was a dealer option? I wouldn't think so due to the complexity of installing the top but who knows.

My latest unhood pic as I added the insulation over the fuel line since I drive in very hot weather some times. All the mods I made have stopped the fuel boiling in my carb bowls as it has not happened in the last 4 years since adding the phenolic spacer and heat shield and moving and insulating the fuel line. I dont have a pic host right now so you have to click the FB link. Ron
