What fluid is everyone using on their 727 torqueflites? For reasons I can’t remember when I resealed my transmission I put in full synthetic ATF+4. Issue I am having is that if I try to take a long trip, say over 20 miles the transmission starts acting up. It feels like it stays stuck in second gear and I really have to punch it to speed up past 30 mph. Only cause I can think is that the fluid when reaching a certain temperature causes the bands to slip.

I can't see where the fluid would be doing that but I guess there's only one way to find out....

ATF+4 is not the problem IMO. I’ve run that in every 727 for years now. Trucks, cars, 2WD, 4WD, doesn’t matter.

Might be a problem in the valve body. I once lost third gear only, and found a cracked passage wall in the valve body.

Only disassembled to the point where it would allow me to change all seals and gaskets as well as o-ring. I have adjusted the kick-down linkage several times and feels like it is shifting fine until it starts to act up. I am going to wait until it starts to malfunction again and stop to adjust the linkage slightly to see if that has any effect on the problem. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Is the fluid properly cooling? Going through an external cooler or through the radiator? Does it smell burnt?

It is going through the radiator. Does not smell burnt. Is there a way to make sure it is cooling properly?

If it doesn’t smell burnt chances are it probably cooling properly. Without installing a temp gauge there isn’t a way to tell the fluid temp when operating. I would drain the oil and pull the filter, see if it looks plugged or the oil is dirty.

What year is the vehicle ? And is it a 727 or the 4-speed (46RH , 46RE , 47RE) ? Just curious since on the 4-speed version 727 the power also goes through the overdrive unit. But it sure sounds like a bit to much throttle pressure so hopefully adjusting the kickdown may help. Mopar also had some front drum issue's on some years that also caused them to not go into third gear to well. Ron

Type F for more precise shifting
Either you are low on fluid, have a valve body issue, torque converter or it is not cooling. If it does not smell burnt the cooling is not the problem.

Well I replaced the torque converter and flex plate when I changed the seals on the transmission. I know my fluid level is correct, when checking it at neutral in operating temperature and it does not smell burnt. Therefore, by process of elimination it may be the valve body. Can it be changed without having to remove the transmission?

The valve body can be removed without removing the trans. Pull the pan and filter and find the bolts.

Hopefully you'll find the problem there. There could be a chance that the governor in the tail shaft is sticking for whatever reason (a bit of debris etc.) which would require a lot more work.

Type F is a good one for the old 727.

No its glued in the case the Valve body will never go out.

It may need the kick down (front band) band adjusted. Back-off lock nut, screw band adjustment anchor finger tight, than back it off 1 1/2 turns, Hold anchor in place while tightening the lock nut. Then re-adjust kick down linkage.

Wow just wow.. once again I am amazed at how simple these classic machines are. I was cruising the car this evening and after a while began to have the same issues with the tranny having a hard time engaging into third gear. I got home and parked and was again frustrated by the issue. I know that the kickdown linkage has a large part in the transmission working properly. So I decided to try to adjust it again by going one turn at a time on the throttle rod. After I shortened the rod three turns the problem seemed to go away and the car just drives completely different as far as acceleration. Got on the freeway and it was a joy just how it was running. I pulled over at a gas station thinking that I if shortened it more I may just get better results, but that was not the case. With just two more clockwise turns I began to have issues going past 30. So, I went back to only the three turns I had initially, and boom a joy to drive again. It’s amazing how just those three little turns changed the car. I even punched it at the light and made the tires squeal.
