Painted the other head & valve cover

Now I can do some more mock-up to determine the best intake manifold fitment. I bolted on the heads then test fit the intake - I checked for the best port alignment (fore and aft). These manifolds can be mounted backwards because the carb pad is horizontal to the the head surface. I tried it backwards, then swapped the heads and tried the intake again both ways. Turns out it fit best with the first mock up (intake forward) That makes me happy because the Edelbrock script will face forward, on my old engine the intake ended up backward mounted.

I also bolted on the valley cover to make sure my custom breather box clears - it does.

Installed the distributor to make sure there's no interference - it's close!

Next,
Bolt on pan, oil pump and left motor mount assembly to try to figure out how to route the oil pickup line. I'm finding this is not easy when you're using the stock type mounts and a stock K-member. It was compounded by the System 1 oil filter I want to use, it's too big (diameter) and interferes with the oil pickup line routing. I'm gonna have to do something else.

Just finished reading your entire build thread. As usual, the talent and things you can learn from different folks on this forum is truly priceless. Even though I don't envision myself doing a lot of the different work you've undertaken, I still find tons of useful tips, tricks and ideas to use on my own car. Thanks for posting in such detail, no doubt many folks, like myself, will benefit from your labor and documentation efforts.

I had some time to work on the engine this week end - installed my pushrod length checker to figure out pushrod length, at the same time I checked piston to valve clearance. Plenty of clearance - more than I expected. Sorry forgot to take pictures, time to order pushrods.

I also bolted on my nasty old headers and installed the plugs to figure out spark plug wire routing, I still have to cut to length and install the ends.

I have an update on Mark. He went to some specialists and it turns out the cancer is not as bad as was originally thought. He is getting chemo and is responding well to treatment.

Update -

Got some more time in, made some adjustments to the plug wire routing and started cutting and crimping the distributor cap ends on. I also dropped the intake off at the machine shop to get it machined. Tomorrow I will order the pushrods.

Update -

Got the intake back from the machine shop and the pushrods are being made now.

Finished up the cap ends of the plug wires. I had to buy a single MSD 8.5mm wire and re-do the #8 wire (too short) Can you believe a single wire costs $35!?

out of curiosity , how long pushrods are needed ? have u ordered them ?

I could not accurately measure them because I don't have a big enough caliper. They are roughly 10 inches long, I just shipped my length checker to them to measure and build them. I'm going to Smith Brothers for the pushrods.

mine came out 9.400 , do have an extra set-----------
 
Update -
I glued the gasket material to the flange then I cut out the port openings and bolt holes with an exacto blade.

Now its' time to clean it and paint it - should get that done this weekend.
 
I bought another cleanable oil filter for my engine, this one is much smaller and wont interfere with the oil pump pick up line, I bought it from Bob Mazzolini Racing. it's expensive but I sold my System 1 filter for $100 so that made it easier to swallow. It is really trick. it's machined from billet and comes with a socket to install & remove it. Id say the only draw back is it will reduce the total oil capacity of the engine.

More assembly, getting closer. I had to "install" both rocker assemblies twice. The left side had the exhaust rockers in the wrong spots so I had to remove it, swap rockers and re-install. Then on the right side I forgot to make sure the rocker shaft spacers were in the right spots, so I removed to check - good thing I did because the right side rockers would have been oil starved.
