Hi, I have an interesting question about fender tags. I have a 1970 Dodge Charger and a 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring, both with all codes easily visible (the chargers' being in better shape:

My question is; why isn't the: axle or wheel code on my fender tags??! It doesn't appear on this tag, my plymouths' tag and also another 71 charger that I know of!.. I know decoders over the internet always have the codes for those options, but they're just not on my tags. I know I have no chance of (at least) finding my original wheel code, as I have no broadcast sheets... Does anyone know why those codes wouldn't have made it to the tag? Any info will be a real help.. Thanks.

I think only the things that had a hole are on some fender tags. My Charger doesn’t show N85 for the tach/clock, and surely they are original. Or is it N86?

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that only the "major" options were on the fender tags; the rest of the stuff was on the broadcast sheet under the back seat.

Broadcast sheets weren’t something all cars came with. Some came with the wrong ones. And if speakers were put in the car in the late 70’s... they might have gotten tossed.

What was coded, when it was coded and even where it was coded on a tag changes year to year, plant to plant and during the year.
Every plant had its own protocol of coding tags. meaning, don't compare two different plants or years. Coding may or may not coincide.

There are few hard and fast rules when it comes to coding but not every option or thing gets put on the tag regardless of 'major' or 'minor'.

Generally, only items that affected paint and trim or body in white get coded on a 69 and later tag. If a hole gets punched somewhere (tach, radio, piece of model specific trim, spoilers) it's usually coded. If it affects the trim (vinyl top, stripe, interior trim) it usually gets coded.

Axle packages get coded as the package affected the radiator shell and/or other items like the transmission tunnel (body in white). Standard drive trains don't get coded.

Wheels don't fall under these guidelines so they are not coded on the tag.

True, but they were all built following a broadcast sheet. Whether it went with the car or not.

The fact that not every code ends up on the fender tag is why the broadcast sheets are so sought after.

Wish the mice hadn’t got to mine! LOL

True.

But all cars came with a fender tag.

it may not list everything. And not much on the Lynch Rd. cars. It did however list the important things. Engine, Trans, Exterior color, and interior color. Everything else is just fluff you can add. Obviously A12 and is it A18 for the Super Bird? Is on the tag.
