Hi,Restoring 1970 R/R b5blue 383 4 speed.I noticed factory made?Straight-line on shock tower R/H side.Has anyone seen this before?Roadrunner is St Louis 11/1969 built.Cheers Ian FADA05B0-14DD-4CCB-9B68-4FE3752CAEA5.jpeg

That is supposed to be a stamped panel, someone was probably starting to cut it out for a patch on another car.

It might be a defect in the material when it was stamped at the factory. Is the line on the opposite side as well?

I doubt the die was flawed. It really looks like cut-off wheel marks to me.

I am working on the exact same vehicle right now. The car does NOT have this mark.

Sure looks like someone had started to cut that section out. Appears that a careful wire feed weld would correct it.

The steel coils that parts are stamped from are often flawed. That could have been made by the decoiler as well. The only coils plants really concern themselves with are the ones the outer panels are stamped from.

And that line is too consistent to have been made by a guy with a cutoff wheel !!

Odd for sure, never seen one like that. Enlarge the pic and look at the right side of the line. Doesn't it look like the cut line continues on to the inner fender?

Years ago, people saw lines on Mars, and thought they were canals. Could it be the same here ?

Other side does not have mark.It does not extend to inner fender. Before I primed with undercoat I noticed another very fine straight line further up the tower. I will sand back and see if I can get some pics.Cheers Ian

Agree. Worked in rolling mills 38 years. It was probably one of the last stampings on a coil. At tail end it was dragged on something sharp.

Looks like it’s from factory. I think I will leave it as is,and not try to cover it.Thanks for the info.

I would cover it - save yourself future debates with so-called experts !!!
