Two men have been arrested after police said they found them with a car boot-full of Kentucky fried chicken and over $100,000 in cash as they tried to cross the border into Auckland despite New Zealand’s strict Covid-19 lockdown.

The men were arrested after allegedly trying to flee from police near the Auckland border. When their car was searched, police said they found a large quantity of KFC, as well as the cash and a number of empty ounce bags.

The arrest struck a chord with New Zealanders – especially Aucklanders, who have spent a month in a strict level four lockdown that does not allow restaurants to open or residents to order takeaway food.

In such an environment, fast food can take on the aura of a high-value illicit substance. Last week, a man was charged by police after posting a social media video of crossing the Auckland boundary in search of McDonald’s.

After the KFC arrest, a police spokesperson said “officers noticed a suspicious looking vehicle travelling on a gravel road, and upon seeing the police car, the vehicle did a U-turn and sped off trying to evade police.

“The vehicle was searched and police located the cash, alongside empty ounce bags and a large amount of takeaways.”

Close examination of the police evidence photos revealed at least three buckets of chicken, up to 10 tubs of coleslaw, and an undisclosed quantity of fries.

While the scene resembles the plot line of a buddy crime comedy, it is in fact a serious breach of New Zealand’s lockdown laws. A breach of the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act can result in imprisonment for up to six months; or a fine of up to $4,000.

The men will appear in court for breaching the health order, and police said further charges were likely.

I heard that yesterday.
Apparently the two patched gang members were driving along a gravel road near to where the Police checkpoints were stopping motorists on the main highway. Their car was spotted and a patrol car gave chase....the car was eventually pulled over and searched.

These gang members are going to get hell from the cops, hell from their gang bosses, and a beating in prison hopefully. Just goes to show that you can't fix stupid. The car was probably stolen as well.

That $100,000 in cash will be drug money.....so they'll lose that. The empty ounce bags just confirms to the cops that it was a drug and takeaway run.

I said to my wife someone needs to do a video re-enactment of the incident and call it "The Dopes of Hamilton"

Talking to a guy I work for yesterday, and said there are people who are dumb enough to post pictures on Fartbook of themselves holding buckets of KFC and Bags of Maccas....fully flouting the lockdown rules.

OH sure the chicken bones will be held in evidence?:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

This could get political real fast. How stupid is this? And I mean the lockdowns not people ordering take out. Deaths and other information is being falsified in the name of robbing rights. Great job NZ and Australia in turning your countries in to concentration camps.

Fines for Lockdown breaches have just been increased to $12,000
Just announced this afternoon.

Breaching Covid-19 restrictions will now mean an increased infringement fee of up to $12,000 for individuals when imposed by a court, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced.

Speaking at the daily Covid-19 briefing this afternoon, Ardern said fines for breaches of the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act were being increased because of the view that the infringement regime did not reflect the severity of breaches.

"Our success has been really based on the fact that people by and large have been really compliant ... however, there has been the odd person that has broken the rules and put others at risk. Specifically we've had some people break out of MIQ including in a handful of cases, with Covid, who have posed a threat to the community."

She said there were some issues very early on, but they had reduced when the government introduced fines for those who breach the rules, such as alert levels or breaking the rules of MIQ.

Success? You bet! At imposing sadistic immoral conditions on free human beings. I'm sure no one in govt has lost a day of pay.

How many one ounce bags of coleslaw did they sell to make that $100,000?

I'm constantly surprised at how many folks just give up their self-determination to the
government "for their own good"...

Worst thing you could ever hear is I am from the government and I’m here to help.
