Have had hooker long tube headers on the 68 roadrunner since I put it together 20 years ago. I’ll be changing the steering box to a Bergman/Borgeson soon, so the header on the left must come out. Considering changing to shorty style, either Hedman, Sanderson, or TTI.
I’m tired of dragging the flange on speed bumps, and the Hookers have rust spots, even though they had Hookers ceramic coating when new.
OR…HP manifolds ? Engine is a 383, Hughes cam, 750 Holley vac secondary, edelbrock performer RPM, 906 heads, Mopar electronic ignition.
Like to hear some input on which one. Shortys or HP manifolds ?
Thanks much !

Just my opinion, putting stock manifolds will be a big power loss, but if that's Ok fine. My 383 sure liked headers compared to HP manifolds.

I have TTI shorties on my engine. Probably giving up 20-30 HP over long tubes, but this is not a race car and they clear everything.

Tti long tubes on one of mine and they fit awesome, no clearance issues etc. If their shorties are anything like the long tube ones I would have no problem recommending them

I'll recommend the HP manifolds, I've never liked the look or sound of headers and really don't care how much HP my motor makes as long as it runs and performs well then I'm happy.

Heck the 440 in my wagon has 100K++ miles and the compression across the cylinder varies from 90lbs to 140lbs, there is a chunk of cylinder wall missing the size of a pea, and I have one snapped off head bolt still in the block...been running this motor for over 10K miles with years of family holidays driving through the mountains for hours on end...has never missed a beat and usually gets 14-16mpg. :D

Short or mid length headers will out run the stock manifolds for sure.
I have a 340 with TTI shortys and they work good.

Shorty headers make me cringe, but I have to believe anything TTI makes will be good. Just don't go cheap and buy the crappy Chinese shortys

I looked at your page, that’s a very nice car ! The TTI’s look like what I’m looking for ! Thanks for the input !

So far I’m leaning toward the TTI’s. Thanks for everyone’s input.

Headers or stock manifold. HUM. Well ran headers on our 440 street drag car. Have stock exhaust man's on my 383 now. Headers gave us problem's with room for starter. and the bolt's to block where a challenge. Now with inner coating's they probably run cooler than the old style one's. They always seem to rust up pretty quick to me. So build it like you want it. Have fun is what it is all about. :steering:

I would recommend manifolds, but OEM manifolds are 40 to 50 years old at this point. Between the two, TTI is going to be the way to go.

Make sure you run a performance, or straight through muffler & H/X-pipe if you aren't already. Maximize the power after the collector to make up for the lack of longtubes. It would surprise you how many people purchase longtube headers and cripple the exhaust system with poor quality mufflers or don't install a crossover pipe.

With the TTI Shorties

Are you guys buying their header adapter pipes also , or having your exhaust shop fab something up ?

Thanx Scott

I have been wondering that, too. TTI states on their website that THEIR Down pipes are required… just look like some 2.5 with the correct bends to me !

I purchased their front pipe kit.
The only thing unique about them is the header flange part.

No not on mine it was a flat flange plate with 3 holes.
One thing the TTI gaskets were not good and failed fast. I would not buy them again.
I got them copied at a local gasket maker - no problems now.
I used FelPro gaskets at the cylinder head port.

Easy. Neither shorty's or manifolds, and don't drive over speed bumps. I'm not changing the exhaust midpipes just for either shorty's or manifolds, paying more economically for less performance ?

I dont see why you have to change the headers
Drop the K frame and change the steering boxes
you dont have to touch the exhaust
I have done this on my own car
