My buddy is building a 73 challenger he’s looking for a vapor separator but can’t find one. Is it needed? My 71 roadrunner doesn’t have one from factory. He doesn’t plan on putting a charcoal canister

Just depends on what he is doing. 73 they are mounted on the shock cross member. He can do away with it but he needs to vent the tank somehow.
Your 71 RR came with one in the rear of the left rear fender well.

Any ideas on how to vent it without a separator?

Interesting stuff - thanks. I've never owned a '71 so I had no idea about this. Another reason why I really enjoy this site - very informative. Now I'll be peeking in '71 trunks at the next car show...

If you're not going to use the 4 into 1 manifold, save it and list it for sale.

No one ever saves these and I've seen more than one FBBO member looking for one.

So the vapor separator are we talking about the parts at the rear for the gas tank venting? Or the part that goes on the engine on output side of the fuel pump in place of the fuel filter?

The reference to a charcoal canister indicates we talking about a fuel tank vapor seporator, if that's the case, your '71 did indeed leave the factory with one.

Here's what I did with mine, I looped 2 of the outlets together and the other 2 outlets I ran rubber lines out towards the back of the car.
If that doesn't work, I'll be looking for the 72 & up separator as they are much more compact than the 1971 style.

Won't see one in there it is covered by a metal shield and located in the wheel well..

Yep look for this in the back on the left fender well. Also used until may of 72 so really most of the model year.
