I recently installed a Denso 210-0106 alternator, rebuilt by Denso.
It worked great initially, putting out a steady 14.2 volts.
I only put about 20 to 30 miles on the car, fiddling around with other issues.
Drove it Sunday and noticed it's no longer charging. Volt meter reading 12.0 when running.
No factory wiring is being used, race car style.
My first thought is defective alternator.

Is it possible that I damaged it by wiring it incorrectly? The one thing I am not sure of is that I have the reference wire to the same bus as the charge wire.

Anything is possible, generally they are pretty robust. Not sure what you mean by your last statement but your charge wire should be going to your battery directly via a circuit breaker or fuse.

Battery is in trunk.
Hot cable is run to a bus bar, and the charge wire is connected to that. I know I need to add a break or fusable link, but that should not cause the alternator to fail, correct?

THE alternator must be connected to a load....ignition system or battery directly. IF THE output of the alternator is disconnected due to an open circuit or fuse device while its operating, the diodes will be damaged, resulting in zero or low output voltage and current. The distribution buss should have individual protected (fused) circuits that lead to the various devices....cooling fans, fuel pump, EFI, etc. Just my opinion......
