November 14th 1981 @ 1000 hrs I received my DD-214 from the USN... It was a great four years but four years was enough.... Walked out to my Challenger R/T & headed back to Central California....

In 1972 I had a very high draft number. If mine had been low, my plan was to enlist in the Marine Corps. It was clear to me that even at my young age, the politicians had no intent on winning the war in Vietnam. If I was to go, it would be with an actual fighting force.
Last August I saw exactly what I feared in 1972, total lack of political understanding, courage and competence.
God bless all that have served over these many years.

I got my DD214 Feb 74 after 3 year enlistment in US Army. Had a very low draft number like 68, if I remember and had been called. I enlisted the day before I was to be drafted and after training and a short stay at Ft Polk, went to Germany for 25 months.
Thanks to all who served!

Discharge papers, right? SCORE ! Time does fly by while we are distracted with everyday life.
I didn't place enough importance way back when and lost my discharge papers from my very short time in the Army.

Thanks for your service! May of 73 for me. Gosh I still vividly remember how great that felt after 4 years! Even turned down a $10,000 re-enlistment bonus I was so fed up with the BS.

I headed in the opposite direction you did though; left the Bay area for Minnesota, driving my 61 Lancer wagon, straight axle car, 426W and 4 speed, flat towing my 33 Chevy 3 window coupe behind me. THAT was a trip.

I was kinda surprise to get my draft notice just before my 20th birthday in 71 and.....got my DD214 2 years later from the AF after sliding out from under the draft :D Don't know about y'all, but the lies started with my recruiter. Even a lifer uncle AF Chief Master Sargent told me to "don't go unless you have to" after talking to him in depth and well, those words still hold true for me....but, I do not regret the experience I got serving. Just glad I stayed out of the Army with the eye vision problem I have even though it would not have kept me out of the military. Well, it didn't keep me out of the AF either but kept me out of the field I wanted. Didn't know it at the time but realize now it probably kept me out of the field I picked back then.

Enlisted right after you left and did 10 years in the Navy. Got the electronics training I could not afford for college so no regrets. I was also able to transfer the time in towards my state pension and met my wife in the base club in n Philly. Double win!

My recruiter lied every time he spoke... But end of the day I signed, I served... Wish Pops woulda talked to me about it before I signed, he served in WWII, Korea & Vietnam... Obviously he knew plenty & coulda given me allot of info, but he didn't want me going & thats about all he had to say... Till after I'd signed the papers...

Which is why any time I see a young guy thinking of joining I try to give him as much info as I can... But giving info & having them do something with it are two different things... And honestly thats probably why Pops didn't help more... Kids don't hear well...

Thanks everyone for the appreciation & for those who also served Thanks for doing your part...

No regrets here either. Got an education about the world, people and things I never would have gotten if not for Uncle Sam. ruffcut
