I'm trying to remove the grill surrounds to refinish them. Anyone have experience in removing the fasteners that attach to the fenders? Or advice on the removal of the surrounds? Any help would be appreciated.

There are nuts buried way up in the fender behind the splash panels.
Try a mirror and flash light to see them. Spay some pb blaster on them first.
The Manual might help also.

They are the problem fasteners. So I can get to them without pulling a fender?

Yes. Pull the front inner fender liner and get your flashlight out.

I had a rust free car but the nuts are made of steel that rusted too.

use a 1/4 inch 3/8 (6 point socket) ... (not 12 point) with several extensions to reach it..

spraying some WD40 back and let it soak for a day or so.

most likely they will break from being rusted for 50 years.

if they do break than that can be fixed when the surrounds are out.

I made some bronze nuts out of hex stock twice the the original thickness with a slight taper on one end.

The socket will fit over more easily............. in case you ever have to be removed again... very easily at that.

I know this isn't Concurs but it more user friendly for the future

been there done that....

I removed all nuts whether they broke or unscrewed with out removing the fender parts.

my 3 cents worth.

Thanks to everyone that responded. Removal went without a hitch. That chop saw did the trick.

Reattaching it may be a little tricky though since you used the chop saw.
