NOS 413 Engine

Yes, threaded holes means you have the '62 and newer crank. Also, the paint color is more Max Wedge/Hemi orange.

That engine looks super! Same as I have, casting, year etc. Very nice and runs great. Still has the lighter pistons too, the 440 went heavier. Power isn’t much short of a 440 anyway. I’d like to see the rockers when you have a photo. Probably same as 300K and MW.
The heads have the smaller exhaust ports 1.6”. I thought it was a 518 cast, but it looks like a poorly cast 6.

They stripped the paint and repainted. The pic earlier in the thread shows what the color was coming out of the crate. A little bit darker than this. They are really giving this a once over. The owner of the shop said he has never had anything like this come through his shop. He brought back his mopar specialist out of retirement to personally see everything over. The car is being restored as a tribute to my little brother who I lost way back in high school. His name was Jon Paul. He was born in ‘64. I put a $2000 bid on the car. They wanted $4500 for it because it only had 21,000 documented miles. Over 6 months later, I got a surprise phone call to come and pick it up if I had the $2000. That day just happened to be his birthday March 10. It now has 39,000 miles, but is starting to leak some oil. Runs good though. This engine, shortly after fell in my lap. I also paid $2000 for it in 1992. Kinda fate it seems. I’m going to give the Imperial 413 to that engine shop, and have them give it a once over as well. I’ll post a video of the dyno of the first one when it’s done. Thank you everyone for your interest and love of the mighty mopars.

Yep, 518s are max wedge. If your heads were maxwedge, you'd know it!
Is it possible that the 516’s could have factory adjustable? These heads were used on a 426 as well.

I don't see why not. 273s and 318polys in the mid sixties had adjustable rockers.
Maxwedges certainly used solid lifters, and adjustable rockers in 64, so you know they were in inventory.

The mighty 413ci all but forgotten after the 1963 426ci and then the hemi in 1964!

I have seen them bored out to 4.320 for stock size 440 pistons, amazing.

I have done some research on '516' heads and there are different castings, (same casting number 516) larger ports.
Its all to do with the small exhaust ports for the 1.600 valves...

For some strange reason the 1964 and 1965 '516' castings had a revised ex-port shape, (much larger).
One set of heads came off a Facel Vega with and 8-barrel manifold...:wtf:

I have compared it with the 1967 '915' port and its very similar, some are 1.600 and some are 1.740.:poke:

But every 1966 '516' head I have ever found had the tiny and small ex-port...Go Figure...?

The 413 in our 64 New Yorker was red. Do the heads have 4 or 6 valve cover bolts? Cast in rocker pedestals or aluminum bolt on stands?
Here are some pics. They are cast rocker pedestals.
4-214 is what i see, plus another cast code.

Pictures are a little close Jonpaul.

If you take some pics further away and the combustion chamber too.

There may be some numbers cast into the boss underneath head as well.

Pictures of the rockers as well.

This was an inquiry about the date code. I think that 4-214 means it was cast on the 214th day of 1964. The pic was taken for another who asked about the date code. I’ll get some pics of the rockers if I can. They are getting ready to assemble it.

I have a couple of ‘64 Imps. Both are projects that I’ve gotten running and am sure have never been apart. Here’s what one looked like before I cleaned it up. I’m pry sure it has about 114k miles on it and it runs like a sewing machine.

If we just forget about the '516' heads for a second.. could you post more, better, pics of the rockers?
There was a thread some time ago that touched on the differences between MW rockers and letter car rockers.
Your engine find may produce interesting information on the subject

Honestly I never looked and the covers are back on both cars.
No problem. I’m just trying to get the low down on this new engine. My imperial runs good too. I sent the carburetor out for a complete overhaul. It leaks some oil from the rear main and front oil pan seal. Not bad though. Maybe 1/4 quart in 2000 miles.

the motor is completely disassembled right now. I’m going to try to get photos as it comes together, and a dyno video. I’ll post the results too.

Thanks!
Looks like you might need different pushrods with new lifters.. those appear to be the early neck-down rods. Never seen them myself.
