I have the original oil pump that came on the engine. Is there any way to tell if the pump is good without running it in the car? Everything moves freely and I see no rust or pitting.
Any other time I'd always replace the oil pump.

Take it apart and clean all parts and do a visual inspection. if you don’t see any abnormal wear assemble it using new o rings and put some assembly lube in it around the ring and rotor. There is a spec for clearance between the ring/rotor to the cover but I’m not sure what it is. Be sure to oil prime before you fire up the engine.

One other thing I forgot to mention is be sure the relief valve moves freely in the bore.

Take the pump apart, pull rotor out, inspect the bushing, verify the rotos do move freely, measure the rotor tip clearance on all rotor tips, Look for any major dings in the rotors. The factory service manual gives you the specs you need.

You can buy a melling kit with new rotor assembly and rebuild the housing. As long as cover not worn, will make it like new.
