This engine if a couple hour's drive from me, and I only have access to this one photo. It's in a 1967 Newport. I can't see an RB numbers pad on the left (drivers) front of the block, so am I correct this is a 383? Obviously the casting numbers will confirm, but I'd appreciate visual confirmation before making the long drive to pull it. Thanks.

Based on that mouse nest I hope there's a filter in the cleaner can...

I can't tell in that shot... BB/RB

I would think a 383. Judging form the air cleaner it's a 2bbl engine so therefore not a 440. It also seems that there should be a little more space between the valve covers for a 440. The accessories brackets placement is not wide enough for a RB engine. My opinion.

So if your rebuilding it why do you want a 383 vs a 440? Neither will be the original, IMO you might as well get the bigger one....

its a newport,its a 383 2bbl.
if it was a chrysler 300,it woulda been a 440.

may i ask why you are pursing this motor?
it has probably 516 heads/Leaded,and a wimpy cam,and a 2bbl intake.
you would want to rectify all that with alum heads/or/later 452-s,a 4bbl intake and new cam lifter, and timing chain set.
is that worth doing financially, esp as others are pointing out it costs the same to rebuild either??

I enlarged the photo and it is too grainy to tell. But, as others have said, ask if it is a 2 bbl carb. No 440s ever came with a 2 bbl (OEM).
FWIW, at a glance, I would say it is a 383.

Dam Jerry great eye

Thanks everyone who helped confirm it's a 383. I'll head over there when I have time off work this week to pull it.

The RB and B valley pan bolt spacing is identical. The RB hold down plate is longer on both ends. You can see the difference here ...........
