I have the 727 3 spd auto in my 67 charger. Stock console shifter. A lot of times I have to slam it forward to get it to go into park, sometimes having to try a couple times. And when in gear the shifter arm has a decent amount of play…is this a normal issue? Is this indicative of something not being right? If so, what should I be looking at to fix it? I currently have the console removed so getting at the shifter mechanism is easy.

Worn bushing replacement and adjustment will fix you up.

Also check the shift lever on the transmissions valve body for being loose. Sometimes all it takes it tightening up that levers bolt.

Thanks! Is this stuff that happens inside the car or under it? Fyi- you’re trying to help an idiot haha…I don’t know anything about transmissions. This is all a first experience for me.

Under. Get it off the ground either on jack stands or ramps with the rear wheels chalked. Have someone work the linkage while you look for excess movement. If that's beyond you abilities get some help. No shame in asking for help.

Its under the car. There are linkages from the shifter to the trans. Look for slop there.
I would also disconnect at the trans and move the trans shifter arm through all the gears to make sure you don't have any internal binding on the rooster comb.

Rooster comb? Ok now you guys are just making stuff up to sit back and laugh at imaging me looking for a rooster comb next to the blinker fluid.

Thanks guys! I have to do all my work out of a storage garage the car barely fits in at the moment so I might not be able to get under it very soon. So if you don’t hear back from me for a little bit I just haven’t been able to yet. Thank you so much for your help!!

Not kidding about the rooster comb. It is inside the transmission and it rotates as you select a different setting with shift lever. click on 'search forums' and enter rooster comb.

Why confuse the guy.?????

Most likely the linkage under the car that connects the pivot shaft from inside to outside is slightly out of adjustment or the pivot shaft bushings either inside or bolted to the trans are worn.
The rooster comb is attached to the valve body that rotates with shifter movement. It has detents that you can feel with the linkage disconnected, moving the shaft the goes into the valve body. A service manual can help with this issue.
