This direct drive starter is in my 66 Hemi. Case number is 1889100, also 131 below that.

Nose number is 3924.

Seems to be a six cylinder starter with a manual transmission or Hemi nose on it.

Turns over pretty strong so I suspect it’s been re-wound for heavier use.

Sound right?

I’ve read that thread a few times before and never made much sense of it. Seems to say a 6 cylinder barrel is to short and smaller winding which probably wouldn’t function with a Hemi. Also unclear as to if a hemi nose can be fit to a 6 cylinder barrel. A lot of the EBay connections in the thread are gone now which may have helped clarify some of this.

So is a barrel case 1889100 strictly a 6 cylinder starter? I can tell you it turns this engine over without a hitch. Not sure what bell housing and flywheel I have - most of the engine and transmission unit seems to be 68 but bell housing may or may not be.

If you need any parts here let me know. shipping only.

Mine seems to be fine Fran - just removed it and the manifolds to re-coat them. Thought I would try to find out something about it. I think it has a different snout on it. Here are some pictures - maybe they will generate some info. The main case is 5-5/8” long and about 4-1/2” in dia. It secures with 3 bolts and like most things with a Hemi, it’s a pain to pull.

Don't know about the direct drive starters but just noticed your signature again... Noticed it a few times & meant to comment so today is the day.... Nelson Mandela was a very wise man...

Here are some pics of mine if it helps. Apologies for the picture quality of some of them and the incomplete number - which looks like it begins with 2612. These pics are from before I had it rebuilt and after. One of the interesting aspects is the orange paint that sugests the starter was mounted to the engine before it was painted.

Thanks for posting. Visually that looks just like mine - straight slotted screws in case, same nose piece. Hard to be sure but from the position of the solenoid I would judge the case length to be the same as mine.

it does the job, so 6-cylinder origin or not, I guess there’s nothing wrong with it.

It's interesting how it sounds so different from the classic Chrysler starter sound.

Yeah, Mopar owners take a lot of abuse from the Ford and Chevy guys about the cranking sound of those old gear reduction starters like my GTX. These starters would probably have them scratching their heads as they don’t sound much like the mini starters in most cases either.
