On the street 3700 # car, 700 HP, drag radials? Or with sticky slicks at the track?

Won't blow out the first time? After that you're on your own.

they can handle 600 HP on street tires all day long

I run mid 10's for years on 3400LB+ cars.
742 Case / No crush sleeves/ Spool and good
quality gears.
But Not with Manual Transmissions and heavy cars!!!
My Demon has 800 runs/10 years on it.

google : John Irving Drag Racer

11.30s was about it for a stick car weighing around 3300 and launching at 6k.... :D

Same as everything else it's the "Shock" loads that break an 8 3/4.

Bang'in them with a clutch shock load ?.... or Tranzbrake shock load ?.... THAT... is what kills them.

Now....
if your running a Auto/High Stall Foot Brake deal ? The 8 3/4 will live a very.... very... very.... long time and take tons of abuse !

If you're not too serious, should be ok. Just be prepared to throw 1400 (or whatever you think it's worth) in the garbage.
Then build another. And see if this one lasts.
And then wonder; what if I sold that first, and put the money in a better rear-end...?

900hp, 4 speed, 742 case, street tires = no problems. Not sure on sticky slicks, when you hook up somethings got to give..

Google is so kind, it immediately brought up a PHOTO of you plowing down the Christmas tree with a full size Dodge truck at a major event..... Crazy stuff.... I always have fun at the track too. :poke: PS, looks like the rear end held up ok lol.

The Mark Williams axle broke = Nothing to do with the 3rd member
If I had a Dana 60 =It would have had the very same identical Axles
With a spool they are identical (You do not want to break an axle with one)
The truck was WAY over 4000+++ Lbs.

I laugh about it too now = But at the time - Not so much!

The truck held the NHRA National Record N/SA for YEARS with same 3rd
member even today!

I broke 3 ribs and one penetrated my Kidney causing a 12
hour Surgery during which I died on the table 3 times.

Of course you quit racing after that.

Holy cow Man!! Now I feel bad for bringing it up.
I think people forget just how vascular a kidney is..... Like when you get a transplant, they just cram another one in....too risky to try and pull the bad one out due to all the veins/arteries.

It might!
Edit: as long as it doesn't hook on the street, it'll probably be fine. With that much weight and power, on slicks with a sticky track?....... I wouldnt!

Was the spool a 35 spline unit and where did the axle break? I know they make a 30 spline spool for the 8 3/4 but never saw one for a 60. And sorry about your injuries....

I run an 8 3/4" spool with 35 spline Moser axles. (The track tech seemed more concerned with running aftermarket axles than what center section type? And of course insisted on pinion support. Snubber was acceptable.) SS springs and standard 3 way adjustable shocks.

10.30s in 3000lb Duster. Running 10.5" wide Hoosier slicks. All is well after about 70 runs.

Are pro gears being offered for the 8 3/4 these days? That was most of the problems in the past when they quit producing them....

That's actually a fair question. You know. I don't know? I assumed so? Like Strange Engineering? I have been researching some gearsets for Dana? But my A-body is the only 8 3/4" I have. And holding strong. (At least for the moment.)
