Can’t count the projects whether working on cars and some build projects (like I’m in the middle of now prompting my post) when I’ve run out of ‘matching’ screws, bolts, and even washers. Irritates me to need 8 screws or bolts and have 6 or 7 matching and one or two that doesn’t, even though they ‘would’ work. Have thousands of screws/bolts in several drawers and over the years I’ve depleted the supply of old mates running to the hardware store more often (like I'm going to need to do to continue with my current project). And it bugs me even when the screws/bolts will be hidden or at least inconspicuous. Ok, maybe I answered my question….................as a yes.

How are you with foot socks? :D

Funny ya ask...that bugs me too. My head bolts have loosened up I'm afraid as I just posted...

I'm an overly **** hardware snob too...

I like them to match
or I like to use stainless 12 pt heads or nuts on exposed stuff etc.
I like to use good quality hardware, (like ARP) grade 5 or grade 8
I like to use a correct style washer, lock, flat, hardened, fender etc.
anodised/color-matched, plated, or zinc everywhere too
I like my thru-bolts the have the proper length shanks
not riding on the threads
where the threads 'just stick out', & washers on both sides
& usually stainless steel or grade 5 or grade 8 too

I'm also one that's like that.....same with socks but as I get into my 70's, it's not nearly as bad lol

Sounds like me looking high and low for the correct battery tray bolts for my bee you know the ones that are hidden by the battery. Or better yet the ones that attach the dash frame along the windshield that are covered by the gasket.
Stuff like that keeps me up nights.

actually
I did build a lot of GM racecar stuff in my younger years
Forgive me :praying: :D
(when good MoPars/Parts were extremely rare, old rusty junk
&/or way overpriced, unobtainable
)
most of my GM buds, all think I was a tad strange

they'd use whatever they had lying around :screwy:

I was a frequent buyer at this place called
"the screw shop", in Concord Ca.
aircraft quilty hardware, any size & any style
I spent a small fortune there, they loved me...

A friend and I went in on a car to part out. We were taking it apart and I was removing the wheelwell trim screws from smashed wheelwell trim. He was laughing his *** off at me for saving those screws. He said “just go to the store and buy new ones”. I’m thinking why do that when the correct stainless steel screws are right here for the taking.

it’s been 25 years and he still laughs about this. And I tell him as hard as he is laughing at this I’m laughing at you twice as much.

He has to have new everything on every car. Nothing correct, just new. And then ******* that nobody wants to pay him any money for his cars when he sells them.

so I buy a GTX with all the WW trim gone, now I’ve got all the RIGHT screws.

I also saved a lot of stuff like that but now I can't remember where I put it all!! lol Truth!

When I put my instrument cluster back on my 64 Fury I could only find 2 of the 4 screws that hold it in. I took everything I had assembled in the interior apart looking for those two screws and it pisses me off because they have odd head sizes.

I try my best to make the build as original as possible, including the fasteners. I have ordered so many pieces from 521 Restorations they should just install a tube (like at the bank drive thru) to my address. I passed **** several laps ago. Bad habit, I know, but if it worth doing it should probably be done correctly.

This makes a bunch of sense and I’ve done the same; thus a massive collection of screws, bolts, nuts, washers, fasteners, clips, springs, etc. I KNOW I’m in a lot of company, lol. A lot of this stuff I inherited from my dad’s shop too. And ahhh yeah, save stuff just in case! When redoing my truck a few months ago, took the old box and one fender to the scrap yard as I bought re-pop fenders. Well, grrr…I missed a nylon retainer clip for the headlight on the scrapped fender leaving me ONE needing TWO. I spent hours and hours searching for these damn retainers…nowhere to be found – discontinued part. Web surfing, phone calls, bone yards, fleabay…nada. I’m still trying to come up with something that will work. Only thing is I won’t use any old bolts from the engine, heads, pump, body, suspension...or snarly looking screws. Buddy said “Hey those truck bed bolts still look decent enough; just use them.” NOPE, last thing I need is stripping or breaking it. New GOOD Q bolts I’ll pay extra for.

Post some pictures of the bolts along with size and length. I'm sure someone here has a bucket of miscellaneous Mopar bolts. Including me. That will be able to find you a match. WE ARE HERE TO HELP!

Another irritating encounter while I'm venting was finding the correct fastener clips for the top window trim overlay on my '63 Plymouth. The clips for the quarter windows were different than for the doors. The rears were nylon 'H' style retainers and the front were offset scissor type clips (some broke removing the trim). Well, ya know there's places supplying about any type to be had and the more you search the more you can find. BUT, not always. Finally led me to look at my stash of extra trim as I have the front trim (not rear) with some of the clips. Go figure, the front clips fit perfectly to affix the rear. Made me wonder why ma mopar didn't just use the same clips for the front and rear trim instead of 6 of those H style retainers for the rear? Who knows? Could it be those H clips were cheaper to make than using another 6 of the scissor clips per car? Unsolved mystery.
