Greetings. Absent for a long time here. Unmolested 69' Charger being brought back to life, been sitting for 30+ years. 69 8 3/4 489 case absolutely buried under hardened and crusted s**t that appears to have puked from the vent decades ago. Chunk and both axles recently removed. Recommendations for cleaning? If I immerse the carrier assembly in gasoline are there any internals that will not react well? Last question.... the axle housing and the carrier externals were painted white for some reason; anyone know if this is a factory thing or just a previous owner who didn't like the normal black?

Never heard of white paint. Gasoline (?), I would rather kerosene; but I’m not an expert.

I’d buy a couple of cans of oven cleaner, let it sit for a bit with that on, then pressure wash it. It may take a couple of rounds to get it all clean but that should take the paint off, as well. Outside, of course.

Scrape and scrape some more. I then used oven cleaner and soaked it for awhile.Use good stuff, dollar store oven cleaner didn't work so hot.
I hear ya about buildup.Mine came from Tucson AZ. Dirt like concrete.Got it pretty clean taking off the heavy stuff.

This is what the steering box looked like. Before and after.

Never heard of white paint.
Most raw or maybe a splash of black paint. White was a 70's thing.Don't forget the Peace sign on the back of the housing !
I forgot it on mine..

Oven cleaner worked good.Didn't have a pressure washer, just a hose. You can finish off with Simple Green or I used brake cleaner before painting.Inside Like OldBee above wash out the gears bearings and housing with kerosene.

Jeez, that looks worse than the Midwest with salt on the roads!

Oh, and if you use oven cleaner and a pressure washer be sure to use eye protection. If that crap gets in your eyes at best they will nickname you “Squint Eastwood”. At worst they will get you a seeing eye dog. That **** is brutal.

Max's diff was painted orange! Probably not Max Wedge Orange. Yes, we took the front valence off my '59 Plymouth and painted the front of the frame white!

"Thank you" to the collective. The oven cleaner is something I completely spaced and had not thought of. It is taking multiple applications, but the crud on the axle housing is losing the war.
