Planning a NA big block drag only engine. I'm cubic inch limited so need to make the most of it. It will be injected on alcohol. Looking at a 4.15 stroke, 480(ish) c.i.

Anyone use a SCAT pro series lightweight cranks? Do you like them , is it worth it? How much weight savings is there over a std. (i.e. Molnar)?

Thanks

Cross posting this in FABO as well

ProCar/Scat owns AFR now too, since Dec. 2021

they are well respected in the VW parts world
they make great seats too

I have never used one in a Mopar BB
but I did buy a lot of VW parts from them,
from their plant here in Redondo Beach Calif.,
all produced sourced here
never had any failures

they have been doing SBC stuff for a long time too
had pretty good rep there too

I know it's a different animal

but the fact ProCar/Scat merged/bought & will manage AFR also
(AirFlow Research)
makes me think they are serious about performance parts

I've used Ohio Crankshaft or Callies, for most my all-out builds
(usually Venolia Pistons, Childs&Albert rings, rods & bearings)
big cid, Top-sportsman or outlaw pro-stock combos
(I actually prefer big-bore 4.60" & shorter stroke 3.75" & high RPMs
498cid like many old NHRA Pro-stocks used, for all-out race combos
)
then Mancini Racing or 440source for the more budget builds
like street/strip
I had/have a 383/479cid 383 4.290" (0.040" over) x 4.15 stroke
on the 440Source Made In USA stroker kits, rods pistons crank etc.
12 years of abuse before I sold it
went into the mid 8's) 8.58 @ 156 with 300 shot N2O
& 100s of runs in the mid-hi 9s) 9.77 @ 135 N/A
my last Silver 68 RR, 3250# (me in it about 3500#)
w/MT 315 Drag radials/CalTracs Sacramento test & tunes 100*+ weather
never had any failures associated with the rotating assembly

had problems with their early Stealth Heads
I just don't use them anymore

some of the bargain stroker kits are really good
for what they are

Still a decent forging/crankshaft for the money. Most Scat, Cat, Eagle cranks are Chinese forgings but machined here in USA.
Molnar, K1, Crower, Callies, Bryant, CP/Carrillo, Winberg are a better quality USA forging and even offer the best of billet options obviously for way more money.

I retired from Scat. I can tell you that the owner instills a quality is job 1 attitude in all of his people. The shop has about 10 crank grinding machines going full time, as the cranks came in near net. And they use a Gas hardening system. 10 cranks go in a electronic furnace. They are hit with an electric charge. Makes them glow purple. It’s slick. I don’t know about now but the Chrysler factory used to sell scat cranks as mopars. Same as ford. Their billet cranks are in a lot of very fast hemi SS cars. It’s been 10 years now but last time I was there things were still cooking, lightweights from scat cut weight out of non stress areas. I had a guy running a forged 350 Chevy super light in a turbo car who ran 8s on a 10 inch tire for 3 years. Bob.
