I know I can hear the gnashing of the teeth but this is sixties drag car history.

Enjoy

I have a few friends that are Pontiac fans. They are all nice guys. Thanks!

I had a friend back then with a 63' Catalina with a factory four speed and tach, I don't recall the engine but when we went out for a night he let me drive it a couple of times. I don't know why maybe he had a funny bone but every time I "got on it" he'd go into a laughing streak.

I love all the 60s drag car specials. Thunderbolts , super duty 421, z11 aluminum front chevys,427 lightweight galaxies, and maxwedge and race hemis, of course!

You are a true car guy. We had the Nostalgia Super Stockers race at our event a few years back. I was in heaven!

I have gone to the Pure Stock Nationals a few times in Stanton, Mi., North of Flint. It is neat to see all the different makes of muscle cars racing.

In the video Stan says he started out with a 389 Super Duty and a Clutch equipped automatic. And then went to a 421 Super Duty with a 4 speed and a ‘57 Olds rear.
Haven't watched the video yet. Before the 421 came out, the 389 super duty was the big boy. Replaced the 389 SD with the 421 SD. (Just like the 409 was replaced by the z11 427 w-motor, and the 406 Ford was replaced by the 427 hi-riser, and the max replaced by the race hemi). All somewhere between 62 and 64.

I deleted the post because I thought you were referring to another car!:D

A '68 GTO and a '77 Trans am are parked with our mopars. 60s drag racing was a special moment in time.

We had a Thunder bolt at our track and a Caliente, don’t remember exactly when but Thunder bolt tagged the guard rail. Neither did well. Probably 1967-8.

Could have been a 389 tripower, or a dual quad 421, if it was a super duty. 389 is much more likely.
Edit: have you seen the late fifties/early sixties Pontiac tripower fender emblems? Beautiful!
My first " sort-of " muscle car was a 1959 Pontiac Catalina that I bought for $500.00Can. in 1965. It was a 2-door post car equipped with 345 hp. Tripower 389. This was a very rare car up here in Ontario, as our Pontiac's were built on Chevrolet chassis with completely different series names. Back in the day, this was a very powerful car, despite it's size. If I had not discovered Mopars in 1967 ( I bought a 1962 Dart ex-OPP. cruiser ), I would likely be restoring and driving Pontiac's today.

Most of the fast 60s drag specials WAY overpowered the tires available then. The stockers were on rock hard seven inch tires!

A friend of mine passed away a few years ago. Found out later, after his daughter got rid of it, he had a 59 tripower cat four door, salted away in his garage.
Wish I had known.

I ve got a friend with a thunderbolt clone, also with too much power, and too little tire. He also tagged the wall with it. (Procharged 408 Windsor, 1200hp at the crank)
