I have been checking out a 69 Road Runner Convertible. Appears to be a very nice car. Admittedly, I have not been able to get a VIN from the seller yet to confirm that the car is a legit Road Runner, and not a Satellite clone. That aside, I noticed that the car appears to be an original AC car. But for the life of me I cannot figure out what the heck is going on here with this hose routing. What is the third connection that the short bypass hose could be going to under the two hoses that appear to be routed for heat purposes (yellow arrow)? And what might be the reason for having the manual shut off valve installed inline for the heater hose (green arrow)? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The yellow arrow hose is just laying there not connected! He has bypassed the heater control valve on the firewall. And put a valve inline to stop the hot water from entering the a/c box. Most likely he did this because the oem heater control valve is leaking or inoperative. Or both?

The Heater Control valve can also be rebuilt for around $100. Easy to remove and get rebuilt, heater core issues with an AC car is another story, but it appears the hoses are hooked up and if it doesn't leak you should be alright.

Where those 2 hoses go thru the firewall is where the ac evaporator Inlet & outlet piping should be sticking out of. This tells me that either the evaporator is not in the heater/ac box or those 2 pipes have been cut off, which means a new evap. coil would have to be put in and the h/ac box would have to come out and be evaluated. Where is the rest of the a/c system. Compressor, condenser, dryer, and all the fittings and piping that goes with it. If they no longer exist, then the car no longer has a/c. Even if those parts do exist you would probably want to convert to 134 refrigerant and have to replace all that anyway. Hope this helps You a bit.

This is not correct for a 69 RR. Those are Heater Core pipes and they are in the correct position. Evaporator hoses are positioned closer to center of car almost centered behind carb and intake.

OK, my bad. My only experience is with a '70 charger and that's how they are plumbed. The heater hoses are plumbed to that bracket where the single hose is attached.

Edit: Went out and checked my car AND I'm wrong about everything I said above. Just forget everything I said and good luck with buying the car. I have go and take my Memory medicine or something.

Hot mess sir. This fellow may have had a heater core issue, with a heater bypass valve. He also added a valve to the core intake....probably because the heat riser in that valve (blue wires in front) may no longer function. That guy must be a VA surgeon, hehe.

.....just for the record, the non-A/C core fix and heater valve fix is a snap on this year.....so don't let that hold you back......got lots of fresh experience rebuilding these.

I would guess the original firewall valve leaks because the inline valve would not stop a heater core from leaking.

My concern is of he cobbled this together badly what else is done poorly on the car.

I decided to take a pass on this car. Closing in finally on a car. Hope to have more to share soon.

I’m not clear if there’s an heater motor there either. It’s firewall mounted on AC cars but that doesn’t look like a motor there which is 3 - 4” deep. Maybe it’s just the picture perspective but what’s there looks flatter than a motor should to me.

Shut off valve is an "old timers" thing. The purpose was during the summer months to stop the hot water from entering the heater core. There by, the interior "stays cooler". My experience with people that did that? No differance noticed.

Not sure about the yellow arrow thing, so I don't want to comment on it. It does, and at the same time, does not, look factory. Where does the 3rd hose connect to?
