Is my block fixable

Motor is a 426 hemi that I just had pulled since I have a tiny garage and no picker, plus my grand national is half apart next to it so really no room.
Shop that pulled it called me and said looks like flex plate bolt hit the block and broke a piece of it off...? I go over and pick motor and car up and sure enough on boss where starter bolts in a huge chunk is missing. Now at this point I'm not sure how it happened, if it was indeed the flex plate bolt, the shop or whatever. My main concern is my block has a chunk missing now adding to my already going to be costly rebuild. How fixable do you guys think this is, I think it should be but wanted to get some other eyes on it and see what you guys think. Hopefully pics attach ok.

Easy fix for a qualified welder. Do you have the broken out chunk?
 
You mention if it went into water jacket but fixable. MO. If water jacket exposed just:rolleyes: more money.
Just look at my block you won't feel so bad.

No I don't have the chunck unfortunately. Hopefully that is only damage and no crack anywhere. I figured it was fixable just wanted some feedback or reassurance
 
Recommendations based on a partial 2 dimensional picture wouldn't give me any fuzzy feelings. It must be completely inspected by a qualified cast iron welder.
It is probably repairable but you need a personal inspection.
What is the rest of the story ? Your car broke and you had someone else pull the engine for you or it was damaged when the engine was removed ???
 
We have been repairing cast iron with muggy welding products. Typically we weld it cold and build it up with stitches. It will take a while, but has been working on our repairs. Since, you have a pretty good sized piece missing...You may be able to cut a chunk off a junk block and weld it on. The welds dont crack impressive stuff...

That part only seals to the oil pan. Even if you don't have the old piece you could cut one out of a scrap
383, 413, 426, or 440 block. No structure there. Tig braze it or have a qualified welder do it. It'll be fine. My friend Hemi kicked the rod out the side. It was patched with a piece from another block. Been fine running low 10's for years. My race block just got patched up as well.

That's exactly what I'm wondering. The bolts on converter seemed fine. Maybe a small knick. I'm guessing the shop I had pull motor for bumped starter to get all the bolts and must of had one loose and it came around wacked it? But I did not see any other damage any where else along the bolt circle on block so who knows. Engine is at a reputable hemi builder in the northeast now.

Were you driving this when it happened? Or was it in the shop for some sort of repairs.
 
I'm guessing someone tried to rotate the engine assembly with a crow bar in a flex plate hole and pried against the case.

My dad purchased car from person who had motor built. So it was technically already done car. He didn't do much with it mostly sat. They downsized house and I bought car sold the 03 cobra I had. I thought it wiped the cam when I first pulled valve covers lash was wayyyy off. So I did lash and all the lifts seemed fine even measured a few with an indicator. I also changed oil then and noticed the drain plug which is magnetic had all sorts of crap on it. So I pulled intake and looked at cam. It seemed fine the pushrods however, were another story. Cheap pressed on end ones and they mushroomed and the ends were wore down. So I'm sure that caused enough oil to not get to bearings. I'm hopeful most of metal is bearing material and pushrods since cam didn't seemed to beat up looking at it. But I will know sooner enough when shop tears it down.

Yea I'm thinking that's what happened. They did something to rotate it to get the bolts off flex plate. I just have no way to prove they did it unfortunately. Sucks I don't have the space to have pulled it myself...

It might of been that way all along. If all the flex plate and converter bolts were in that eliminates a loose or missing bolt. The pan might be sealing so no oil leak. One of those cases who knows??????????????????????
 
Wow: Sounds like hack work in a couple of places. That's why I just plain won't buy a "done" car, half of them are lucky to start and stop. Good luck going through everything to make it a usable car.

I soaked the flux off and used it for TIG. Welded up a hemi block with it. Worked well.
