Engine keeps running after turning off key & the only way to stop it is by disconecting the battery, While it is running i unplugeed all the wire connectoers coming out of the steering column thinking it was an issue with the ignition switch but it keeps running
any suggestions where to start looking for the problem?

Thanks Larry

Electric cooling fans? If so try unplugging them.

there are no electric cooling fans, car is stock accept for electrionic distributor

Did this just happen out of the blue or has anything been do to it recently? I would be looking close at the ballast resistor wiring sounds like you are still getting voltage to the coil with the key in the off position.

Does the car keep running as normal or are you talking about dieseling?

Hey Guys

Its not dieseling, and i replaced a burned out ballast resister a couple months ago but it was fine after that
i drove it a couple times no problem & out of the blue this happened ???

Ok now you added more information which will change the answers you get. What I would do with the car off attach the battery cable and check for voltage at the coil.

If the car dies when you disconnect the battery, that tells me the alternator isn't charging or you have something wired wrong. The car should not die if the ignition is on and you disconnect the battery. If your ignition is in the off position and you disconnect the battery, that tells me something is either wrong with the ignition itself or a wire hooked up wrong or broken.

I have not hooked up anything additional to the alternator, everything is how it came from the factory accept the mallory distributer which has been on the car for 5 years

You for sure have a feedback loop to the coil positive from someplace

I did not change anything since it was working perfectly, with all the wire conectors coming out of the steering column disconected it still has power to the coil somehow,

That's why I said check for voltage at the coil. I would wait till it does it. Key now off and cable pulled to shut it off. Re hook the cable and check for voltage at the coil.

You could get feedback from the alternator through the voltage regulator

ok thanks guys i will check out the things you suggested & let you know how it goes
i really appriciate all the help

No reason you should. However the blue wire run the circuits alternator, regulator, and ignition. That's why I said check it for power when this is happening. It could be a process of elimination. He said he unplugged the ignition switch when it was acting up. I suspect wires melted together.

After looking at the diagram it seems the voltage regulator depending on if and how it failed it could back feed the coil positive. Also if the key in buzzer relay is still present it could fail and back feed the coil as well. Just innerweb troubleshooting here but these are things to check off the list.
