Last Breath

Back when I still surfed (young, like 30 years ago)
we'd see pacific dolphin/porpoise (the grey upper & white belies)
every so often
It "allegedly" was a good sign that usually meant
"no sharks or sea-lions" around

I did have one come up to me & jump over the front of my board
a few times (they usually just swam by, eyeball ya')
never aggressive ever
anyway he was smaller & really playful (pretty young I think)
he followed us thru the waves, having a blast
& all of a sudden he "bolted off"

We were in by the cliffs, 150-200 yards out-ish, north of Santa Cruz,
& a bunch of seals/sea-lions they were coming our way,
while we were waiting in the kelp
we caught the next roller & got out of the water...
They could be aggressive & are shark bait...
It is great white grounds

The dolphins came right back in a school/herd/group (pods)
w-t-f-e you call them & ran them all off,
'sort of like' they were protecting us humans/surfers

It was pretty cool to watch
