It doesn't matter about the under color. Gray, white black etc. Single stage will cover it

Depends on the paint color and formula. Some covers great, some not so much.

FJ5 sublime and FY1 top banana both covered everything in one coat.

1967 GG1 Dark green metallic paint I tried to cheat and go over some sanded parts and it took way to much to get it covered and not see what was underneath. I stripped it and started over. Was small parts so not a big deal.

Look at a few Panther pink cars. You can tell which ones were painted over dark and over white.

No matter if its base & clear or single stage what color of primer/ sealer will change the color,
Solids , metallics, candies , they all will change shades depending on what is under them.
Just using extra coats of color does not work if your trying to match, extra coats takes you to a deep or darker shade.
Solid black like a 9700 chrysler black is the only exception.

Have to disagree. That would mean every color is translucent. Which just isn't true. Most spray out cards are white with a black line . Once your line is covered you now have black and white coverage. Now i will admit yellow or lime green or similar colors are translucent. You will never cover a black line with yellow.

The shade of primer will make coverage easier for sure but I can take 2 doors on a car. Have one primed white and one primed dark, once I have full coverage you will not be able to tell they were different . Are you fighting the color yes.... but it can be done

I hear what your saying, but we will disagree on this subject.
The more color you dump on trying to cover miss matched sealer shades the deeper down the rabbit hole you go.
Sorry but that is the reason for different sealer shades otherwise we would only have grey. :drinks:

Citron Yella was very translucent. A lot of clear pigment in the mix. Maybe for shine or to add depth. Double coat, let dry, double coat. Thats over light grey primer! Looks nice though

The color of primer under the topcoat will/ or should I say can have a bearing on the tone of topcoat. Just fact. I guess if you applied 10 coats maybe not!

Picture is worth a thousand words. Just painted this on Monday.

FORD N6 blue . A very low hiding color.

Picture of spay out card with black white coverage ( took 7 coats ) .

Brand new tail gate and bumper ends. Sealed with neutral Grey sealer. BAD call on my part , took 6 coat for full coverage .

Repair on box sides done in separate booth load and a black sealer was applied over repair ( 4 coats ) .

End result....... all pieces / card same color .

This was a new alternative formula I had not sprayed before . The spray out card is now labeled with " dark sealer " for future reference and efficiency.

Waterborne AutowaveMM by sikkens for anyone interested .

Southern Urethanes is a great source of materials and tech.
They sell a very limited choice of topcoat, but if you check it out, you will find recommendations for color of sealer for several popular colors. Like said, there are reason for such advice.

Ppg spray out cards we use.
Nice blue , 7 coats ? What was the Ford factory sealer shade ?
We have not used water borne systems,
With only a couple years left we decided not to.

My first 66 Plymouth was yellow....the undercoat (primer?) was black. The car was bought new in mid 66 or so......and it surprised me the first time to do some body work on it.

Factory prime was white which was odd to me.

Yes 7 coats for the black and white spray out card. It's is an on going complaint of ours that the sikken coverage is horrible with some of their colors. This is a prime example no pun intended . This , PBJ from dodge and b561p from Honda all terrible coverage.

But their color match is pretty remarkable especially the new reds on Mazda

The first time to rattle can a big block with the orange it surprised me how well it didn't cover and took 3 coats for it to start looking good.
