how much are your dogs

Newfoundlands are about $1500-$2500. I don't even want to know how much I spend on food but it's a lot.

Wile E, I could swear yours was mine..... Mopar.

Oh, yeah, they look like twins ! Jet is a little over 4 years old now.. That pic was before she was 2, so she's a little bigger now. But your middle pic looks exactly like her when she was a little younger !

The best pets are the free ones!

Both of ours have been free.

Both have also been purebreds but without papers.

...but as my wife says- "there's no such thing as a free dog".

It's a shame you are on the wrong coast. I know someone who would gladly give up a Malinois puppy, especially to a Malinois owner who knows what he's getting in to.

The worst part is most Mal owners don't know what they are getting into. Definitely not for the faint of heart or someone who cannot make time to mentally stimulate the animal. Hollywood is making another movie about a Mal again. It makes me upset, more people are going to go out to purchase these dogs and probably have no idea the time it takes to train them.

I always grew up with Labs and Aussies. My father used to always say how smart his dogs were, then he met mine when I got orders back to the East coast. Needless to say he was blown away. Credit to my wife though, she dedicated an incredible amount of time training the dog while I was out to sea and deployed.

Ours have always been "free"
Journey: Black face boxer from Sister inlaw(RIP)
Bones: White boxer(deaf) from sister in law(RIP)
Titan: Brindle boxer rescue from trailer trash $200
Lumi: French bulldog from Sister in law.
My next will cost me, tired of being the dog waterfowl and pheasant hunting.
Looking at a Pudelpointer.
Problem we have is we don't anticipate to be without a boxer, and 3 dogs might be too much. I could do without the Ratdog(French bulldog)

One thing that wipes the slate clean on dog expenses, especially if you have at least two, is the endless comedy show you get for free when they are goofing around or sometimes when they are serious. Like the mortified look you get when they fall off the couch or in Neko's case when he is sitting on the cat bed because his nemesis, black cat, is on his.

Zeke needs more room on the couch. Cuda [cat] trying to avoid getting a boost nip from Toga. Cuda is bummed she can'y antagonize this pair of dogs like she did with Coco and Neko.

Top to bottom:
DeeDee.jpg
DeeDee was a Chi my wife got from a breeder right after we moved into our new house in 2003. The breeder wanted to buy her back...hell, no! Dee Dee loved to go for car rides. She lived nearly 16 years before she was too tired and weak to move very much, although she never lost her appetite, despite not having any teeth left! She was $100.00 initially, since that is the theme of the thread.

GiGI was a PapiChi mix. Smart as can be! She would stand into the wind and let the breeze roll through her fur like a glamor shot! She hated riding in a vehicle. She'd inevitably puke on the floor! But she loved being brushed and pampered. She and DeeDee would play like pups. Her and DeeDee would wait by the door for me to come in from work, tails wagging and all! She was seven when she was killed by my garage door - the beam didn't sense her laying at the threshold - and she was crushed. I felt horrible for months after that! GiGi was a freebie, and we got her at six weeks.

Rolene was a Black-Mouthed Cur, a breed common in the South, but can be found anywhere in the US. I got her from a Boxer rescue, as a result of her family being displaced because of a May 2014 tornado that leveled their home, and the family couldn't find temporary housing that would allow a larger dog. She found me, actually, at a rescue event that featured several rescue folks. She cam right up to me after I'd sat down to pet her, and laid her head on my lap - take me home! I actually started crying when she did that. This was only four weeks after losing GiGi. We had her up till July 21, 2021, when she died of advanced liver cancer. That devastated me! Getting her from the rescue was just $75.00. She got along with my little DeeDee just fine! Rolene would howl and yodel, but rarely barked. If she barked, it was important! She loved to run, and loved to chase squirrels. We had a cat at that time named Chou-Tsu that she would cuddle up with on the porch, or in the sun by our firepit.
Ruby couch.jpg
My newest dog is a Mastiff-Boxer mix named Ruby. She was right at two years old when we got her in August '21, both as a present to me and the fact I need a dog around me! Losing Rolene was painful, and Ruby was found. She is a pound rescue. Her previous family didn't have the space Ruby requires. She has two speeds - sleep and zoom! She is a consumer of food, and a great fan of my cat Russia; although the cat mearly tolerates her. She is very smart and follows a handful of commands. Loud when she wants to be loud; she has a deep, almost baritone bark that'll wake the dead. She sleeps with my wife and me, as have all of our dogs. She has her dog bed, plus her spots on all three couches! She was $40.00 at the city animal shelter. They had a half-off going on as a result of over-crowding. Another dog gets a chance at life in a good home!

Neko was one heck of an ongoing project. Every day was a new day with him. When we first got him, he didn't know how to play, had never been in a house, had never walked on tile, never been around cats, very hesitant with people[ due to being a bait dog in a fight club] and many other issues. We had to lay a path of towels on the tile floor, had tile throughout the house, so he could walk on them. When he started getting regular and decent food, he farted for the first time. The look on his face and his reaction was hysterical. What the heck was that and what's that smell? Was that me? Later on we were able to pull the towel trail up as he got used to the tile. After about a year he had learned about playing with Coco and toys. He was coming more out of his shell day by day but the first time he barked, it was like his first fart. Was that me? He had a big burly Mike Tyson bark. Like a little dog. He got talkative after awhile with Coco, it was funny listening to those two. He had sounds like Chewbaca. When he first got in the house and checked out the cats, especially Cuda, they first went nose to nose then she bitch slapped him. He was now her dog bitch. Anytime they were close and made eye contact with him, she would tag him. Thats just how she rolled. After we had him for three years or so he started having explosive poo problems. We switched foods, it would improve some then come back My wife tried making rice and chicken for them with nothing added. It was like throwing gas into a fire. Also during the explosions, he would cry out in pain. We took him to our vet again and again explained what was happening, this after being told we were imagining things several times, he proceeded to give her some fresh squeezed. Now she saw we were not imagining things. He had 4 different viral infections going on. About this time my wife found out about Darwins after we watched "Pet Fooled" which is now on Youtube. Very informative documentary. That stuff pretty much stopped his problems other than the occasional incident that would be caused by him getting scared. He would basically pucker up the old exhaust when he got scared so rain or shine I had to get him out for at least 30+ minutes of leash free walk so he could empty. Once we moved back up here we got all the kids established with a vet we used 26 years ago from our prior time here. We described what would happen with him when he had issues and how he would scream in pain. She could relate as she too has dealt with Colitis, now we know what he had, on a personal level. Loud noises, wind howling and many other things would scare him. We had tranqs on hand but needed to get them in before which didn't always happen. One night when it was loud from fireworks I had a bright idea. I pulled up Huskies howling on Youtube. He perked right up, started barking and howling with them. After about 10 minutes of that, all was good. I highly recommend that to others with similar situations of the pooch being scared.
