Just replaced the heat riser on my 70 RR. What is a good lubricant to use on it.

There’s a hear resistant anti-seize - copper color. It night work but as a paste it might not penetrate to where it needs to be.

Antiseize WHEN you were putting the new shaft into the new bushings. after that the only thing that's going to do much would be a little shot of gun oil.

Permatex made three paste type anti-seize compounds, depending on temperature encountered. GRAPHITE BASED, which is good to ~ 1600° F. COPPER BASED, which is good to ~ 2000° F AND NICKEL BASED, which is good to ~ 2200° F. GM Delco use to market an excellent carbon solvent/penetrating oil called CARBON X-88. This material, when applied to the frozen heat riser valve shafts, would free the control in a few minutes....it was relatively inexpensive.....but....due to EPA regs, not sure if its made anymore. GOOD STUFF.... One of the paste anti seize compounds maybe soluibilized with acetone or disc brake cleaner and applied to the ftozen shaft...... just talking out loud.....

I have to ask. Why replace the exhaust restriction rather than just remove it?

The factory stuff was graphite based spray, still sold part #4318039ad. nothing really lasts due to heat and exhaust pressure, lock ease spray also works and leaves graphite behind. I use superflake oven lube because I have it around. Anything that leaves graphite works.

Can the heat riser be tested prior to mounting the manifold back on. The butterfly valve swings freely. Can i heat it up to see if it opens properly ??

Sure, just use indirect heat so you do not get the spring too hot with a torch.

Without using heat, can you tell me which way the counterweight turns ( clockwise or counter ) when mounted.

Pic is direction it turns as it cools. It will not move as you heat it exhaust pressure does that, that is why proper position before welding flap is important.. Heat gun did fully heat the spring enough so you can watch it close.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Mine should work properly.
