Carter 3-step metering rods and corresponding jets/springs

I have a pair of 67 4299s here, 3 step rods

It actually has nothing to do with the 3 step rod. Plenty of carter 3 step rod carburetors use the standard AFB 2 step rod piston. There are a handful of carbs using this style piston with added spring. 4131 is one besides these 440 afb from 67. I do not believe I have seen an AVS with 3 step rods use this piston. But there could be a model that does.

When Carter used the 3 step rods with 2 step pistons in an AFB, did they used the flat cover or the raised cover?
 
Seems we are off track. The actual piston are not 2 step or 3 step rod specific. Piston and the associated spring are carburetor and car manufacturer specific.
The most common spring under the piston for mopar across many carbs and years was the 604 spring I mentioned early. Almost all carbs also used a common step up piston 207, but in 66 and 67 (as an example) mopar AFB used either the 207 piston, 223S or 232S. The S is assembly so spring and washer or piston design could be different. I bet it is spring.
Move to the 67 CAP carbs and all the carbs only used the 207 piston despite some carbs using 2 step and others using 3 step rods.
Yes 2 step got the flat 65-43 cover and 3 step did always get the 65-48/49 (they are side specific) covers.
All my info comes from the Carter Service and parts manuals, which is a really must have source if you are going to work on the carbs a lot.
 
Have you seen the Carter Service manuals published on line in PDF? I found some potions of them, I think 1969 and 1976 or there-about updates, but never managed to locate anything online showing Carter data for models before 1969 I think.
 
No, there was a Chrysler PDF of some carbs including the hemi afb and 68-701ish AVS. But to get significant data I had to purchase 2 different sets of the books. Plus it was hard to get books that covered the later carbs. I think manufactures and carter were feeling pinch and documentation started to fall off in the late 60s. Most book I have seen on ebay only included up to the very early 60s carbs and they can be hit or miss being complete.
 
Got the old GTX up and running today with the correct AFB on it for the first time in the over 20 years I’ve owned it. Seems to be running smooth and strong. Many thanks to everyone who helped sort out the rod and jetting issues, particularly Dragon Slayer and Dave 6T4 but also the rest of the responders.

It’s a 4327S. FSM has 16-405 rods but Dragoon Slayer has told me the Carter SM for a 4327 is a 16-164. So as close to that as I can find is my goal. If anyone has a spare set of those please let me know.

Jon Hardgrove, of Elton Missouri, bought all the old Carter/FM parts, catalogs, documents etc.
I believe he is selling off now [ retirement?]. Some good info on his website.
