Do You Prefer NOS Engine Parts?

Hi folks,

As some of you may know my other interest besides Mopars is tractors and I am currently restoring one. The engine on the tractor has not run in 15 years or more and is going to need to get rebuilt; which I will attempt to do myself with my stepdads help as I never rebuilt a small engine and he has.

There is a tractor show the first weekend of May (or Mother's Day weekend) that you can drive your tractor around at, and I would like to possibly if I can to get the engine running so I can drive the tractor around as is.

I REALLY like and MUCH prefer NOS parts and would like to use some in my engine such as rubbery piston rings, gaskets etc BUT i also know that these parts are 50+ years old. My 2 questions to all you folks is....

1) do or did you use rubbery NOS parts in your engines, and

2) do you advise me to?? I'm pretty sure I could if I seal everything correctly and rebuild the engine the right way and not half ***, BUT my stepdad seems to think that 50+ year old NOS rubbery parts like piston rings, gaskets etc is NOT a good idea because technically it would be like starting at square one before I rebuilt the engine.

I would really like to know your thoughts, opinions, and advice

I like NOS parts but on my 1964 Oliver 550 diesel I used new parts based on the advice of my machinist and engine builder.
 
What tractor are you trying to get running? Not familiar with the term rubbery?

You don't want rubbery piston rings.
 
It's an old '67 Craftsman lawn tractor with an HH60 6 horsepower horizontal shaft Tecumseh, I will put pictures of it on here tomorrow or the next day
I’m sorry I thought you meant a tractor not a “lawn tractor”. On my old Wheel Horse lawn tractor I did use NOS parts as it’s a 6 horse power and easy to take apart and fix.

NOS mechanical engine parts - No. NOS electrical components such as starter relays - YES!!
 
Picture is not mine, but of a AC at a show this last fall. I restored my '65 cub cadet 100 it has a belly mount road grader.....My first wheels, :) I first drove it 43 years ago.
Tecumseh was a very good quality engine. I see no reason not to buy oem parts if you can find them.

We have a couple craftsman st16 inside somewhere.Lol The ones we had ran a overhead cam Tecumseh and there was no mosquitos in yard from the smoke back when we retired them.

Never seen one like you have, looks very complete

Out of curiosity I had to look up what we had, time flies. Didn't consider them collectable back then.
