I'm converting my '68 Coronet from a column shift, to a console and had a question that I couldn't find the answers to, so here I am.

My car is currently undergoing a restore, so all the interior has been cleaned, stripped and painted. The bottom of the car is almost ready to be epoxied, however, I would like to weld the brackets in before I lay the primer down.

Here's my question. The motor and transmission are being rebuilt, so I don't have access to either at this time. But to get brackets and linkage aligned properly, does the transmission have to be in place?

**my main concern is the shaft coming through the floor, but I believe the boot will allow for a little wiggle room?**

Thanks in advance

Tim

Short answer is no. The transmission and engine do not have to be in place. The floor pan has a designed place in it for the linkage to come through. This does not mean that the placement of the console brackets is not critical.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

From what I gathered, the best way to achieve optimal placement, is to attach the brackets to the console and tack the brackets in place?

The bracelets have been removed, but the placement of where the linkage comes through is shown. Enlarge the picture and you can see where the bracelets were.

Absolutely attach the brackets to the console first, then tack weld them in place.

Cut the round hole out of the floor, mount the shifter linkage, level the car side to side
and then set the console on the hump and level it. With the brackets mounted to the
console, you can center the linkage in the round hole and tack it in place!

This afternoon, I successfully installed the console, which was made possible by the FBBO group.

Time to disassemble the console and prepare it for fresh coat of paint!

Cheers!

A lesson I learned. Even after careful measurements from the donor car, look at the console position through the back window before you weld! The one in my fury is not in there right when you look at it that way
