Thinking back to the ‘60’s

Thinking back about the 60's......we seldom used seat belts back then.

Nowadays, wouldn't give it a second thought....always wear them now.
Yeah, ironic given my line of work I never used belts plus all the driving I had to do in a company ride (not to discount all the years driving my muscle cars). Soon after my 1st kid was born was around the time car seats for children became the thing. We visited my folks parents and my FIL was watching me carefully belt in our daughter in the car seat (older ones were a PIA sometimes) then get in ready to drive and he says "With all that attention to getting your young one seated safely, you're not buckling up? You could become a flying object in an accident and land on top of her." Funny how certain comments can shock the brain matter! From that day forward always buckled up and for decades now it's an unconscious ritual to belt in.

Shoulder belt on my '69 GTX passenger side I believe has never been used? I do use the lap belt. But the shoulder belt is only useful to keep you in on a severe roll over. You're still hitting the steering wheel. Seat belt technologies certainly better today.

But I have to admit. To this day putting seat belt on isn't automatic. I do if it comes to mind. Everytime. No excuses, but it does from time to time not come to mind. (Especially short trips.) This is certainly due to growing up with nonchalant seat belt law and practices.

Grandkids said they got a coupon the other day because of excessive wait in the DQ drive up window! Never heard of that before.
Couple hundred thousand new people every month coming to the US.... Think about it...

Dairy Queen is historically slow. Better stuff takes longer. Our DQ is having labor shortages. They will be closed some days with sign saying "Not enough workers"

Yep - same around me - my favorite take-out pizza place near me (6 miles) is closed a lot - no staff. So go to the other one 15 miles away. Only costs me 10 bucks for gas, lol.

Funny, the food stamp and welfare office has TONS of people there....

Thinking back to the 60's......people did not throw away as much stuff as they do these days. I've been working (contracting) at the local rubbish tip for nearly a year now, and I am constantly amazed (as are the employees) about the quantity and quality of some of the items being tossed out. Some of the items have virtually nothing wrong with them.

We really have become a 'throwaway society'

I couldn't agree more! When I first got married, I was a cub, first year carpenter, in love and broke as a joke. When we got done building a house the laborers would come by and clean up. All 2x4's with nails in them got thrown away. I asked if I could have them, they laughed at me and said yes. Within two months I had enough 2x4's and nails to finish off my basement, yes, many of the pulled nails I used!! Poor people, have poor ways. I retired at 52, who's laughing now!!

As kids, our family typically manned the Little League concession stand for the local league
while we boys all played up through the seasons.
When we didn't have practice or a game, we were expected to help with concessions...

The standard Coke fountain in those days had Coke, Fanta Orange, Root Beer and Sprite choices.
Of course, we kids almost immediately started experimenting with "mixed drinks"....
I liked all the drinks together and soon, word spread about my "suicide" soda concoction.
At least, that's what they started calling it.
That's what we called it, too.

Edit to add...

We had a Dog n Suds across the street from high school.
We all called it Arf n Barf.

I loved A&Ws as a kid. Had one close to us in Roseville MN. I’ll always remember the night we were in the stall, all 3 kids in the Kingswood Estate back seat, mom and dad in the front, when this totally hot blonde dives up next to us in her then new powder blue Maverick. I didn’t really know what sexy was, or meant, I just knew something inside me said “you want that”. Dad was doing what he could to avoid eye contact or appear to be looking, lol.

Momma burger, Daddy burger, fries, root beer floats...

I get the impression from some posts that the A&W chain is losing popularity in places, is that true? They seem to be popular enough around my area, a quick look on the on-line yellow pages shows 18 locations in Surrey. I've never had to look hard to find one, and still enjoy their food.

They were never widespread in Minnesota. Probably due to shorter season. But we still have 3 within the city's limits. I think about a dozen Statewide.

The A&W family of burgers- Papa, Mama, Teen and Baby.
There is an A&W near where I used to work. Two years ago a samowich, fries and drink were almost $10. And it took forever.

Ours also have the Double Teen, Grandpa Burger (3 patties), Cheddar bacon Uncle burger and Buddy Burger (single or double). Not to forget the non-family types like the Mozza burger (single or double), beyond meat burger and Best Burger Ever Burger which claims "Your mouth is about to lose its mind, with grass-fed prime rib* beef, real cheddar cheese, garlic aioli and fried pickles, all on a brioche-style bun."

I really like their onion rings.

Yes, they have disappeared in some states.... Was THE turnaround spot where we cruised in late 60's, early 70's....

At 5 guys its almost $20........

On a instate road trip with a couple of my kids I spotted an A&W in a smaller town about 60 mi South of the cities. Still doing the outdoor ordering from old style intercoms. My kids were. "Is this the same as the A&W retail sodas sold in the stores? I had to explain it was the other way around. It started with these drive up soda shops then went to retail sales.

Burgers/fries and floats were very close to what I remembered. I had mixed feelings eating in my '69 GTX. But too bad. It was what we did in 60s/70s. They still bring up that stop in their conversations from time to time.

Faribault by chance?
