Home A/C unit needs replacing. I’d appreciate any advice on which brands are best and most reliable these days. I know so much of the internals on these units comes from somewhere I don’t Want it from - I’ll give you a hint - red flag w/ yellow star. If I can’t get legitimately made in the USA I suppose Mexico or Canada by a US company would be ok.

If any members are from SoCal I’d doubly appreciate a legitimate installer. I checked Costco - big price and Lennox units. From what I could find Lennox has at least the fans and blowers from China - I suspect other parts as well. Interesting how little I was able find on that subject from some of the brands.

This is new to me so I’d really appreciate any good info from the FBBO brain trust
Thx Much!

I have had two Trane units (Fla & AZ), and my dad got his Dual Zone Trane system because of mine. All worked well, and they are built in (or used to be) Tennessee. A qualified and certified installer is a must as my AZ install was hindered by tech not familiar with the electronics. All that was wrong was a bad start cap and he did more damage than good. I had to wait a damn week for the board he blew up, the infamous "Oops"... The units might not be cheap, but I am happy with them and how well they have worked. Don't get talked into the electronic filter unit though like I did in Fla. It was a major waste of money. They tried like hell to sell me one for my AZ install, but I held firm.

Edit, all of our installs have been heat pumps.

We had a bad experience with Goodman. Furnace quit in the winter and the house froze with no one home. It was less then a year old and they would not cover any damage whatsoever other then the chinese part.
Our Amana has been ok. Had to do some ac repairs after 10 years. But I would consider that normal.

Agree electronic filter is waste of money.

Don't buy a unit from Costco or a place like that unless you can install it yourself and don't expect warranty if you need it.

Was all this before Amana and Goodman were one company or quality control in badge engineering?

American Standard

I've had a system from them for 25 years and recently replaced it with a new American Standard system. Moved the old system to the new shop and it is still working perfectly.

FWIW, American Standard is made by Trane and basically a clone, but slightly cheaper than the Trane brand name units. Uses the very same parts and are easily available.

I’ve got a Trane central ac/heat in my home. That damn thing is soooo quiet! Works really well in 110 degree heat!

We have a York. In 17 years we've had to
replace a motherboard and an inside leaking
coil. It's been a very good unit.

I sell and install Trane/American Standard equipment, and have exclusively since the mid 90's. York before that. I see all the major brands around here but as far as longevity and repairs goes, the Trane/AS is the best imo.

  • Ameristar’s A/C & Heat Pumps are manufactured in the U.S. — in Tyler, Texas (1-1/2 hours southeast of Dallas).

My original Ac system was a Philips branded system. Probably the cheapest the builder could find. It lasted about 17 years until a lightning strike fried every board in the system. Nobody sold the Nordyne boards I needed. The insurance accepted the claim and I had a new Rheem system put in and its been good so far.

According to Nortek's website their O'Fallon, MO facility is HQ, model site and test labs. The Poplar Bluff, MO facility is a distribution center.
I never knew they were located here. I used to go to a doctor a couple blocks from there.

Ruud or Rheem. Best for residential use. I like Carrier commercial units. Mitsubishi units are also great for the right application.

I have American Standard units and after 14 years they are great. Our main unit is one of the twin compressor, variable speed units and it’s absolutely the best AC unit we have experienced.

We have two Goodman's (2014 and 2016- rental properties) and one Bryant (2019- residence).

Of the three the Bryant has had a few issues, all covered under warranty.
Blower motor, capacitor, relay.

Last week, one of the Goodman's blew a capacitor.
$260

At the time Goodman was run independent from Amana. We found out Goodman was selling Amana designs from 15 years prior. Likely why it looked affordable on paper. We had 2 homes at the time...one w a Amana which would stand behind their machines if there was house damage ...on the other hand Goodman would not. We trusted the installer of the goodman which turned out to be a fail. If Goodman would have stood behind there equipment my opinion would be much different. I would never recommend them. Take time and read any companies warranty before you buy. Don't learn the hard way. Goodman sold cheaper cause they cut corners. Not sure what the status of Amana is today. But in hindsight...after we found out that Amana was connected with Goodman I would likely not buy anything from either.

260 for a capacitor???

I have had one of all the leading brands and NONE of them have showed me that any of them are better than the other. Some things are like cars, you get a good one or your turn to get a bad one. They are what they are, but I will say this, I had this off brand Miller unit installed at one of my lake houses and it's the only one that in 20 years has NEVER been looked at, period.
