Do what is necessary to make it SAFE and enjoy it.
Once you tear it apart, life may get in the way and it will end up on the back burner.
I agree with A/C is a must anymore.

Why not enjoy it as is, if it is sound. Looks great, maybe paint. My humble opinion.

Give 'er a coat of paint and spiff her up, do the a/c add-on, make it comfy and enjoy
why you and the family love it so much!
If you transplant a cars' soul, you're gonna lose a lot of what makes it special to begin with.

Welcome to FBBO
you really should do another thread
but here's some sound suggestions **

if you are not worried about originality
stuff that won't 'butcher it up' like some will think

as a true daily driver at 80mph, I'd do a engine drivetrain swap
** or options I'll list below
*** more extensive options

or sell it & buys something else, that can do the job

**at a min. make it safe-r, do all the necessary safety stuff

so does it have a 318 ? (or a 225 slant 6 ?)
it should do 80mph easily with a lil' 318
**if "geared properly"
**a nice efi, could (?) help cold & hot starts, it has a fuel bypass system
But;
**a bypass regulator w/electric fuel pump system
or factory 'evap' vapor seperator, with a return line/vapor line
going back to the tank, like 69-70 & later B-bodies BBs had
may require some mods to tank, for the return line
or
**install a later style fuel sending unit with them provisions
would help for a carb'd set-up too
keeps fuel cooler & constant flow

***get rid of the castiron intake & **** carb,
help resolve the vapor-locking (or if need be reroute)
isolate or insulate the fuel lines from underhood heat

**a better carb & intake, a small 4bbl 600cfm Holley
on a Edelbrock Performer dual plane intake
&
**better free-er flowing exhaust
like 2-1/4" duals, with an h-pipe,
w/tailpipes all the way out the back, still be quiet
would also wake the lil' 318 up too

**add better brakes,
or
**at a min do new lines & flex hose
(Teflon lined stainless steel, so they don't swell)
&
**proper rear gearing for the speeds you want to drive
(***or maybe an overdrive trans)
&
***add some swaybars, frt & rear for handling
&
**good shocks, min.
**along with quality radial tires min. (***bigger wider (?)
it should be just fine

***otherwise do a modern engine & drivetrain swap
much more involved & more $$$

the lil' 318 should handle it, doing the proper stuff
won't be a rocket, but it's a More Door anyway,
it's not meant/intended to be

IF
you really like the car
I'm great at spending people's $$$ :poke:

good luck & happy MoParing

What makes everyone think these were not ment to be drive 80 mph? Gas was cheap and plentiful none of the stupid double nickel stuff many interstate highways didn't even have a speed limit yet.
Make the required adjustments for today's gas and drive it.

Funny. 20 years ago I had a friend bid on several Harleys not understanding that you could win multiple auctions! Luckily he won only 1!

Leave the paint, just wax it.
Put a modern Hemi with matching trans, double HP, double mpg, just make sure you get ma Mopar out of the ECU (or just change it completely) so you will not tied to stealership.

Welcome from Missouri!! Looks great!!

Yeah, I don't get the mentality of folks that think a 318 can't keep up with today's traffic.

Where the F did that idea start?

My vintage 318's won street races back in the 80's and 90's.

No one's saying a 318 or slant 6 or anything else can't keep up at 80mph. Any car w a 1:1 final drive, 2.73 gears and 26.5 inch diameter tires, which was the typical highway cruiser setup, will turn 2,800,-2,900 rpm at 80mph. A modern hemi w the 8hp70 automatic behind it has a 0.67:1 final drive. Exact same considerations as above, 1,800-1,900 rpm at 80mph. Way less rpm, stress, and therefore depending on the leadfoot driver, better fuel mileage at 80mph long highway cruising.

But at what cost? Can the end be justify. For some of us the pocket book counts. Yes you will save a few dollars after done. But 10 to 12 K still buys more than a few gallons of fuel. The 2800-2900 also put the teen about where it was designed to be. If anything put a 500 behind it but I wouldn't count on getting better fuel mileage.

Yugo's aren't as common any more.

I know everyone’s gonna get bothered but did anyone notice it’s a four door ?

i mean no matter how good the price was would any upgrade really be a win ?
5000-10k hemi swap on a four door ?

My first car was a mor door with a poly teen but swapped in a mild 383 and the fun factor tripled at least!! But, if it were me, I'd drop a 360 in it but a few mods to the teen and it would do better too. Thing is, there's nothing but big block stuff around here anymore :D My 383 Challenger knocked down decent mileage with a 2.94 in it.....but in the 80's, was there anyone worried about mpg?

More doors have become more popular as have wagons. 4 doors have been a staple people have gotten used to over the decades. Even the Chargers are 4 doors. Ok, for me being old school and old, has to be a 2-door or my 1st is I’m a vert fan. And used to be 318’s were despised; but for many they’ve become a nice motor to have and build, one of the most durable-reliable engines built. My ’63 poly I bought in ’94 driven from Pasadena CA to WI, ran so damn nice, I put off any major do’s on it until 2017…completely rebuilding it with performance upgrades. I did do a few things early on that woke it up noticeably – dual exhaust, 4bbl, electronic ignition, and swapped in later year sure-grip 3:23’s. Yep, I tossed around a BB for sometime and this is a decision based on being a BB fan, racing it, or able to do big burn-outs. Now my poly isn’t quite as quick as I’d prefer; but the thrill of more giddy-up so seldom crosses my mind (as it did when I was younger street racing or occasional trips to the track with my BB’s) when I’m taking it to shows or cruising the countryside. All your call and if you have the extra cash and time to build it with a Hemi – that’s your personal wanna do.
