Max tire size, I'm breaking my brain

ever feel like you're ice skating up hill ?

i was all set on these for the front & rear. guess what... the tires are on intergalactic back order. Not finding stock anywhere, i called Nitto, they said they are in production, no idea when they would ship & could be months.... ARG!!!

Trouble is, I'm having problems trying to find that same size rear 275/50-17 , seems to be an odd size for whatever reason. i might have to settle and the the shorter 275/40-17 , this seems be mfg by a few different tire mfg and readily available.

suppose i could go with the M&H at that size. but it's much more then i wanted to spend.
has a bunch of good reviews. may be worth it...

The M&H is a nice tire, but again, like the mickey, primarily a street/strip tire. If you aren't drag racing your car, you will likely be happier with something else.
Edit: wheel hero shows a nitto 555R 275/50x17 in stock, $179. But again, 555R is a drag radial type tire. But, for $179? I'd might give it a shot....

i think that's the 275/50-15 wheel you where looking at ? i'm not seeing that size in the 17" wheel.

Yep, sorry, you are SO right. Googled 275/50x17, and one of the spots referenced was wheel hero....... and I didn't notice they switched to 15s. Sorry
You might need to bite the bullet, and go to a 40 series. Looks like they are more common.

Have you considered going to 18 inch wheels?
I put 17s on my truck, and I wish I had done 18s for the tire, and wheel selection.

i did look at the 18 for the rear but they do not have in stock. i called them and they said they were "in production"

i checked a day later on wheelhero and it showed the Nitto 275/50-17 as stock. i called them and they said this was incorrect. but their rims stock was updated daily and should be accurate. i may end up going with the shorter 275/40-17 regardless. Lots of tire mfg make that size but looks like only a hand full of companies make that taller 275/50 , so i'm thinking it may be a bad choice if i need to get a replacement.

for the front , i was aiming at a 17x7" Rim with a 225/45 (or /50) -17 , this would be a little shorter then the 225/70-14 i currently have, these rub (touch) the front or the fiberglass fender , going in reverse, full lock. wanting to avoid this i thought i could get a 'shorter' tire.

Buy a pair of the tires and wheels you want to run on the rear, and when you get em, try em on the front. If they work, then you can run the same all around. If they don't, then you will know what won't work, and can go smaller.....

I run 295/50/15 on several sets of my wheels. I like the look of alot meat in the rear but don't want the jacked up look. I have 315/60/15's on my Challenger with -1" lowering springs to keep it low.

Sorry, im not near my paperwork now but, as i recall, I have 235x45 17-8 on the front and back. I think they leave to much space. I have approximately 2 inches of space all around the wheel. It seems like to much space. I would like to fill it out more. Im planning to go to 245/70 on the rear to get a larger wheel and fill it out more. Also the low profile 45 seems to have an affect on my gear ratio. RPM is high at cruise and I think its partly due to small wheel. I have a 1969 GTX. I think i have a video on YouTube.com. Just search there for CAMPBASE GTX. When i see the car ill verify the sizes i have stated. Jeff

alright.... my wife kept yelling at because she was sick of me talking about it.
So I made a decision, thanks to everyone for their input :drinks:

Although i would love to get a taller tire on the rear 275/50, being limited on mfg who make that tire and both were not available anytime soon. I called Nitto and they said they were "in production" but no idea when they'd ship and Summit said they have the M&H Racemasters on back order for months although their website says 1 week to ship. Jegs showed the same, they wouldn't answer the phone so i couldn't confirm that.

Not getting something i can obtain quickly made my decision. if something were to happen and blew out a tire, the car would be down for a long time. I'm taking 33's suggestion and "biting the bullet & go with a 40 series" That's got 100's of choices to pick from and stocked.

went with the American Racing Torq thrust II in the 17x9.5 (5.5BS) in the rear with 275/40 & a Nitto NT05
and a 17x7 (4.0"bs) in front with a 225/45 & a Nitto Gen 2

I'm expecting something like this... I'll post some pics once i get everything assembled.
