Passon 4 speed with overdrive gear

If you mean his 833 with 4th as overdrive then yes it works well.
Back in 2007 we built this 'Cuda with one behind a 451 B engine and 3.73 gears.
Did a long haul Hot Rod Power with the car and put 5,000 miles on it.
Car got 20 mpg cruzing at 65 mph.No power steering or brakes,no A/C. Car is still running around to this day.

I've had one in my challenger for 5 or 6 years now, getting close to 14000 miles on it. I love the gear spacing (rpm drop between gears) and the cruise rpm with my 3.54 dana axle. OD drops rear gear to about 2.8. Only complaint I have at all is it seems noisy in OD. Granted my car is very quiet inside with complete stock (Accurate LTD 2.5 inch) exhaust. It is probably as quiet as could be expected. Just my experience and 2 cents. (note: I only bought the gear set from Passon, built the transmission myself)

Thought they had a modified 833 with a 5th gear OD.....?

When you talk about an A-833 with a 4th gear OD that's different than Passons
The 4th gear OD trans (what I have in my RR) the ratios are:
1st - 3.09
2nd - 1.67
3rd - 1.00
4th - 0.73
This was a trans used (I believe) in Chrysler motor homes.
It's great for Highway. My 3.23 rear gear gives my 2100RPM at 70 MPH
Down side= The extreme low 1st gear (granny gear), and the drop in RPM going to 2nd
Complete bolt in, except for my '68 I had to change (simple bolt in) transmission mount

The standard A-833 4-speed trans was
1st - 2.66
2nd -1.91
3rd - 1.39
4th - 1.00
There was some difference (minute) between a 18 vs 23 spline "Hemi box" but you get the idea.

Passons 5 speed trans is
1st - 2.64
2nd - 1.92
3rd - 1.40
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.70
Passons is a complete bolt in.
No modifications to drive shaft, bell housing, clutch or floor.

The TKX 5-speed trans is
1st - 2.87
2nd - 1.89
3rd - 1.28
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.68

You have to cut the floor (on my '68) different drive shaft, bell housing etc.

I have no personal experience with Passons or the THX5

Jamie Passon was making his own overdrive 4 speed using the A-833 that was a complete bolt in.It was capable of high horsepower before he came out with the Passon 5 speed.
Mopar had their version that was light duty mostly found behind Slant Six cars of the late 70's.

I have the "clean sheet" Passon 855 5 speed. Passon had been modding the gearset in the 833 for years, which uses the factory transmission housing, etc.
The 855 is a whole new creation.
Mine has been great, and I'm going to be putting it to the test behind a 572 RB

I like them. They are a bolt in as well, might not be great with a 340 or a 383 but they work well with a bigger engine.

Passon doesn't make, modify, create, or engineer anything. He did not create or engineer the A855, not at all, not even a little, by his own admission to me on multiple occasions, on the phone and in person, and corroborated by GFI multiple times on the phone and in person.

He is the front for GFI's and Huff's crappy business decisions and garbage parts and transmissions.

If you were lucky enough to get a 'good' trans, good for you, I hope you never have any issues, and you'll probably be trouble free.

Whether GFI built a good trans, consistently, in the past is debatable, however they definitely do not anymore, beginning at a minimum in 2018.
Cheap parts, poor machining, dishonest and arguably criminal business practices.

Still not happy with what happened then ?

I run the passon OD gearset in my 67 dart.
4.30 gear ratio
28" tire
340 stroker (418) Indy heads.

No complaints as I can cruise like I have 3.55. With fuel prices I am debating on gear ratio change.

Future plans for dart include a 400 stroker (512) but planning a t56 magnum this time.

340 drivetrain will end up in a 96 dakota

I’d be 75 yo at delivery if I live that long. My pal in San Jose had to send his back East for repair. Twice. Jumped out of gear on acceleration.

Too bad "Brewers" doesn't have their version of a 5 speed.

Anyone bought this? How well does it work?
Works very well...
For a car designed for just cruising the boulevard..
The step from 1st gear to 2nd gear is wide but for a Mopar wedge motor with torque not really noticed. Around town mostly only use 3rd great but on the freeway open highway 4th gear is great, RPMs drop about 20%. Gears were a little noisy after install but quieted down after about 500 miles...

Just my $0.02..

Great read and saved me 6k plus. Saved he and I a lot of pain.

I have the conversion for the original case, really nice, no more creeper gear, I very often took off from second gear before.
Also went to a 28 inch tire from 26, I'm sure I slowed down the car a bit but I dont care, it still moves really well and drives more like a normal car.......

I don't see the need for a 5 speed with a 440 inch and up engine. My Viper has a 6 speed and it's more of a PITA than anything. Same thing with the 6 speed in my Suzuki 1250. Everything I have is torquey and would work better with 1 less gear.
