Like the title says. There is a 77 Cordoba at the junkyard and it has a nice tilt culolumn and a sunroof too!

I wondered if anyone has ever swapped a Cordoba column into their 3rd gen?

I am interested to see if anyone has done this. I have a tilt column from a Charger and one from a C body, I am going to try and make one work in my 71 but have to eliminate the column shift part. A Cordoba one might be cleaner but I am not sure.

I tried to research it before posting it here and didn't come up with much. Looks like it may be a GM piece or partially GM. My Son's Charger is a bench car so I want the column shift.

That is true, the columns are indeed GM or GM based. Both columns use an column mounted switch where when you turn the key it pulls/pushes a rod that goes into a switch. I replaced the switch on one of the columns I have and it is a GM product.

I am very confident I can get one to work in my car, I am just not sure how much effort will be required (not that it matters). I put a generic hotrod column in my 73 Cuda and made it work, it took a lot more effort than this will be.

I know the mounting plate at the bottom is different as is the actual shaft into the engine compartment.

That rod is what locks the steering in an automatic car. I suppose you could remove it for a manual.

IIRC gm floor shift cars still used the linkage on the column- IE the lower column turned when the floor shift lever changed position.
Not sure if/how that applies to a Mopar use column by the same MFG.

I did this to my 74 Duster in 2009.
The column fit fine but was not a-direct bolt in. I had to modify the wiring. The mounting brackets needed to be adapted to fit and the bolt in shaft with the coupler had to be shortened. These columns use a combination of Mopar and GM parts. They use a rag joint up near the firewall and a regular Mopar pot coupler.
When it was done, the adjustment range was amazing. In the Duster, the steering wheel did sit closer to the driver than before so a wheel with less dish would be a good choice. I am going to do this swap in my 70 Charger…. Maybe over the winter.

The column worked out okay.

If you are contemplating this swap. GET all the wiring from the column down to the plastic quick connect plugs and beyond. It will simplify matters.
The wiring is also a hybrid of GM and Mopar parts.

Were the plastic breakaway mounts and star washers the same?

Wow if you can make a later b body fit your Charger, please let us know. I have several late model columns complete. I also was considering using one on for a project 73 charger and a 72. Good luck

Back in the 90s I put a Cordoba tilt column in my 71 Roadrunner

The spacer to the steering box fit just so:

But the attachment to the bottom of the dash didn‘t really line up properly but it’s held on for a lot of miles including when I drove the car daily back then. The bracket is welded to the column so I think someday if I get ambitious I’ll extend the part that holds the breakaway plastic to match better.

Not so noticeable is that I added the telescoping parts from a C Body column and welded a corresponding hub onto a tuff wheel.

I did end up with trouble on the signal light wiring getting tight when the wheel was tilted all the way up so I cut off the GM adaptor and spliced a better fitting Mopar only connector in its place.

Since the 1967-76 A body cars share a lot of dimensions, the mid 70s Cordoba steering column that I used in my Duster should fit the '68 Dart as well.
