The Roach

Well, they’re in……..

…..but it was a struggle and a half.

Looks like it should be a simple installation with just two bolts, right? They came with no instructions and mounting brackets that had to be unbent and rebent to the opposite direction. The left side buckle had to be taken off and repositioned onto the belt. There are no pictures on Seat Belt Planet's website that show how the get installed. I started this project at 9:30 this morning and finished at 4:30 this afternoon.

So, after all that, how are they? I’d say that they are pretty comfortable, but the retractors suck. When releasing them, you have to feed the last 10” or so back into the retractor and the stationary belts with the buckles that are on the inside should be a few inches longer.

Now that they are in, I’m semi-pleased with them, but because of the aforementioned, I would not recommend them to anyone.

If there are better ones out there, please let me know who’s got them.

This thread is so inspirational and full of quality that I have stuck it to the top. Thanks for all the cool pictures of the build Mark, and thanks for keeping this exceptional build alive on these pages. All of the builds I have seen of yours are top quality and deserve similar accolades.:lowdown::lowdown::lowdown::lowdown:

Here's a sneak peak of the first drive in public......

the GTX stripe is a nice touch

I'm sorry you had so much trouble. It should have been a 1 hour job R&R the stock belts. Welcome to my world.

Those should have come with instructions. I think our problem with retracting is due to these being universal and the heavy Mopar buckles. Try tilting the retractor so it's perfectly in line with the webbing for best results. I agree with you the shirt piece needs to be longer.

I custom ordered a set for the Cuda with the Starburst buckles and the wire post style for the short piece because it stands up like the ones in modern cars. No problems at all with that style. They were made at Seatbelt Planet facility in Edmond, OK.

For future reference, here's a set of instructions I found and some photos of mine.

What brand? I got XV Motorsports. They suck too. A lot of feed, weak retractors, and they look like hell. Just like yours.

How do you both find the fit with the extenders from the roof mount? I converted my Barracuda to retractable 3 point belts and never used them. Thinking about converting my 66 Charger.

Lousy. I use the clips to keep belt lower and away from my neck. Until they fall and disappear. A royal pia.

I've had them in with the stock bucket seats and the ones currently in the car by Scat and they fit well. I'm 5'7" and slim.

5’ 10” and 235. Maybe that’s the difference.

5'10 and 215. They aren't that great for me either.
I have the XV set. They are a lot better than the Snayk Oyl belts that I had only because of the drop down roof mount hanger. Still, they don't retract smoothly and the way they are routed, you often grab the wrong belt when trying to buckle up.
Why? Because these are a BS half measure, a cheaper retrofit to get a 3 point attachment. In later model cars, the factory used TWO retractors, one in the roof and the other either in the floor or a side panel. Having a compact retractor on the floor is simpler but is not better.

I don't want to hijack the thread but do all of these kits mount both the retractor and belt off the same seat belt bolt like yours? I mounted mine further back so it was straight under the roof mount. It retracted well.

You don't necessarily have to use the factory bolt locations. The main problem with these is they are a universal set and the factory style buckles are a bit too heavy for the retractor. The GM style buckles are much lighter and work very well with the spring tension in the retractor. That's why I recommend doing a custom order for the Starburst or blank GM buckles.

I told Mark I plan to let the guts at Seatbelt Planet take a look at the belts in my car to see if they can make improvements.

For the man that wants something that will bolt right into factory attachment points, THIS is what you get. If one is willing to add alternate anchors prior to installing the headliner and carpet, they could pick a better spot.
EDIT:
One thing I'd do is to move the overhead anchor point rearward a bit, maybe even look into integrating some type of slim retractor to mount in the roof. Of course this means it would deviate from stock a LOT but for some, that does not factor in.

Or just use the laptop belt shoulder belt setup like the factory did it.
