You are right, it requires a very precise set of widths, back spacing, and tire sizing to make any bigger tire fit these cars.
275/60-15...with a 275/70 you'd run into total heigth problems with it hitting the front of the wheel opening....with a stock axle location

Not true always. My 66 satellite has 55 year old worn out springs and 20 year old shocks. And the 275's fit pretty damn good.
15x8 with 5" BS is much better. 4.5" BS not good. 15x7 with a 275/60 is perfect. But a little more work to get on. 255/60 will fit a 15x7 in...

Yeah, radials. On older rims and 80's diplomat wheels. 20 years and countless track trips. Never had an issue or uneven wear pattern
275/60 is biggest with 15x7 and 4 1/4-4 3/8 BS. Or 15x8 with 4.75-5 BS. Tight, but fit. Is a bitch to change tires, but the price to pay to put...
