    742 Shim Kit

Hi all, A potentially stupid question, but after I pulled my 8 3/4 742 rear apart and cleaned it I magically lost the shims. Now, when I put back together, well, as predicted it's wrong - pinion is too tight and very difficult to turn. Where can I buy just a set of shims? Preferably a kit with...

Trick flow 240 heads - prep for 7/16 pushrods?

I have the same heads with 7/16 (actually, still putting the engine together as I type) and they clear with 0.030 either side of the centerline. I found it really comes down to how well you shim the rockers to the 0.015-0.030 spec TF and 400 Source recommend for their rockers. Assuming you have...

Head Gaskets with Slits not Holes

OK.. that makes sense from a physics perspective, but then why enlarge the holes in the first place? See my confusion? Go about 90% down this page and see the short description about these holes. I'm curious what you think. http://www.440source.com/blockinfo.htm

Head Gaskets with Slits not Holes

LOL! There was a TON of [email protected] in there. I hot tanked the block, replaced all the plugs. Still had to dig old stuff out. Nevertheless, now it's down to metal again, I'm going to triple check.

Head Gaskets with Slits not Holes

Interesting and I sorta figured that. But why would you want to restrict coolant flow? It's worth adding that this engine originally ran hot. So, I'm inclined to ensure as much cooling as possible.

Head Gaskets with Slits not Holes

I promise I searched for this answer before posting assuming this is a basic question, but I think it's too basic. So I'll be the first dummy. I have a '77 440. The block has enlarged coolant ports (figure 8's.., see pic) and the TF 240 heads have offset large holes that line up with one side...

    RB Deck Clearance

Yeah... I figured I need pistons to get CR, but I was thinking while I'm in there, might as well go big. Or....is that overkill? I'm looking at a 440source stroker, which is a great price for everything, no doubt. But a swt of pistons is about a third of the cost. But with that stroker i get...

    RB Deck Clearance

@Kern Dog you really got me thinking. Ok... Two potentially stupid azz questions. Stupid question #1-- if I were to just swap out pistons and the short block is in the car, and i have clear access to the bottom of the engine...am i crazy for thinking i can change the pistons with the engine in...

    RB Deck Clearance

It's a cast crank, stock. It was just bored .030 and I have a cam for it...XE275HL-10 (231 & 237 @.050, 525 lift). Yes... It looks like the 'new' pistons were basic flat tops that sit pretty low.

    RB Deck Clearance

Thanks @Kern Dog. Well, I'd like to go far with the motor. And figure if I'm going to tear it down, might as well go for it. Your point on money isn't lost on me. Definitely got me thinking. What would be your target CR with aluminum heads (i was thinking 10.5:1, but dunno) and do you think a...

    RB Deck Clearance

@GTX JOHN @R/T Boy 67 .... Follow up. If you had this short block, would you drop in a stroker to get the compression up?

    RB Deck Clearance

Hi all and thank you in advance...you guys have been a huge help. I have a 440 short block and the deck clearance is 0.172... I'm pretty sure it's a MH motor but that seems like a big number to me. Anyway... Here is my question... Is the deck height the same (generally speaking) on all RBs...

You guys are friggin awesome!! Thank you for all the great comments! Ok... Tire is 275/60r15, so 28" dia. Old school. I know I'm kinda wanting my cake and eat it too... I'll admit that:) It's gotta be something the mrs is ok with. And to top it off, it's not a high rpm engine. I didn't...
